Today I started the production of the new album by Brazilian composer, singer and guitarist #ManuLafer manulaferoficial at #EastSideSound @eastsidesoundstudio
Manu Lafer has been composing music since the 80es and has released over 30 albums (some of them with the greatest masters of Brazilian music, such as Caetano Veloso and others) so I am absolutely delighted and honored that he chose me to produce his new album.
I’ve had the privilege of putting together 10 of the best musicians and arrangers I know for this album and today we started tracking with #StephaneSanJuan @stephanesanjuan on drums, #LaurentDavid @oldavidlo on bass and MD duties, #RobScwimmer @robschwimmer on keys and #RichStein @rsdrum on percussion.
Godspeed and a million blessings on Zakir Hussain. It’s impossible to quantify in words what his gift meant to the world, but for sure he was a one-in-many-generations type of artist who truly changed the game.
I’ve spent much of the day reminiscing about the time I got to spend with him in 2013. I had an opportunity to work with him and a host of other incredible musicians he selected to put on a concert in Carnegie Hall. It was a week of 12 hour rehearsal days, and the drummers all stayed for hours after rehearsals were officially done because he was really working the hell out of us (and then I’d go home and practice for an hour or two, sleep for a few hours, and do it all again).
It was the honor of a lifetime to be around him and to be a part of that concert. He couldn’t have been cooler, and there is a lot from that time that I’ve held on to and still practice and use from time to time. All my best to everyone who is feeling a sense of loss from his passing, and shoutout to @mattvkilmer , @jamesshippmusic , @tupacmantilla , @rajbtabla , and @stevesmithdrums

I’m so looking forward to getting back this music next month in Europe. Thanks to @coopermancompany@davedeming and @creative_percussion helping me find my sound in this music. ❤️
Time Travelers Overture is from the upcoming iMAGiNARiUM MEDIETAS album. This is a film for the song directed by the acclaimed animator and filmmaker @marthacolburn (marthacolburn.com) Martha is absolutely incredible and it has been such a pleasure to collaborate with her on 3 films for the album. Please check out her work- she has numerous films and music videos that she has made including a new music video for Suzanne Vega’s Rats. Time Travelers Overture plus 2 other films will be shown at the album release concert this Thursday, Sept 26th at @roulette_intermedium . Yesterday was a day I’m going to remember for a long time. @sheherazaadofficial was invited to play in the fantastic @itgwo festival in Harlingen, Netherlands. The festival is held on an island that is accessible by ferry from the port town. Such a trip to be on a ferry full of musicians. We got to see the incredible @bablbluz completely tear it up, and what a treat it was to hang out with them. Their music is incredible for sure, but they’re equally amazing people. So glad to meet and I hope to meet again soon. We all watched @patrickwatsonofficial and his band close the night out and they are also just simply unbelievable. It was a dream come true to finally experience that music live and to meet him and his band, and they also couldn’t have been cooler. The night ended under a big starry sky by the ocean. Now onto Amsterdam.
My dear friend Walter Heath is finding his rest at the great celestial kiln. I’m so grateful to have worked with him on our drum called the hydra, and even more grateful for his friendship. His artistry will live on in the hands of some of the best percussionists on earth. And to those of you (you know who you are) who had a chance to say thanks to him: it meant so much to him down the stretch. As recently as a couple weeks ago, we spoke about it. I hope that-wherever he is-he gets to hear all of the amazing music his drums are a part of and will be a part of for many years to come.
What an absolute treat it was to kick it with the bosses @engorako and @keita_percussion and the boss of all bosses @jameyhaddad . The only thing that could eclipse the quality of their playing is their quality as people: the very highest! Much love and I hope we can do it again soon!!
