Taught to play the 21-stringed kora by his grandfather in his hometown of Kita, Mali, Yacouba comes from a long line of djeli, the musical storytellers of West Africa who pass down oral histories of the people, cultures, and values from generation to generation through captivating song. Djeli traditionally performed exclusively for kings, nobility, and village chiefs.
In the video clip featured here, Yacouba sings the story of Malian King Mansa Musa urging his people, “Be at peace. Whatever you need, come to me, I will share with you. But do not fight.” The djeli’s song teaches a spirit of generosity, mutuality, and peace over conflict.
