Khruangbin: KCRW Live from HQ ∞ In the past decade, Khruangbin’s music has become a kind of modern shorthand for atmosphere — instantly recognizable, endlessly slippery, and resistant to easy categorization. Their sound has been labeled everything from Thai funk to psychedelic soul, but none of it quite sticks. What does stick is the chemistry between Laura Lee Ochoa, Mark Speer, and Donald “DJ” Johnson Jr. Their quiet, intuitive interplay was on full display during a recent session at KCRW’s Annenberg Performance Studio, where the band mostly performed ii versions of material first introduced on their 2015 debut, The Universe Smiles Upon You.
Moving through “The Man Who Took My Sunglasses ii,” “Three From Two,” "Dern Kala ii," “Balls and Pins ii,” and “White Gloves ii,” the trio leans into restraint, texture, and dynamic control. Speer’s guitar lines shimmer with reverb and tremolo, tracing serpentine melodies that nod to global folk traditions, while Ochoa’s bass carries both groove and melody with unhurried confidence. Johnson’s drumming remains precise and deeply pocketed — nearly metronomic — a steady frame that lets the music breathe.
These ii versions feel like meditations: quieter, looser, and more reflective than their original incarnations, underscoring what has always defined Khruangbin. Built on feel and space, it’s music you experience rather than decode — intimate, transportive, and just a little mysterious, exactly as Khruangbin has always been.
