#blacklivesmatter The events of the last weeks have been a catalyst for often difficult but crucial conversations with people in my family and community.
@monyeeart âs work above has been a wonderful source of discussion for many online, she has led by example by editing her work so as to not contribute to the propagation of comparing struggles and the importance to remember that whilst the source might be the same in some cases, it absolutely does *not* treat/affect everyone in the same way.
To quote @meimeimac :
âWe have work to do in our own communities to show up & make space.
We need to go deeper into our community of often older gens & "ghettoised" Asian spaces to weed out model minority mindsets that feeds white supremacy & white compliance.
Doing nothing makes us COMPLICIT.
But hear me, East Asians in the diaspora. We know our communities. We know the anti-blackness 1st gens carried with them, the fear of survival that poisoned into white compliance, the inheritance of the model minority mindset.
It is a killer and we must root it out. We *know* our own community and we know going in with a bulldozer and megaphone will not work (trust me). On-the-ground community work is how we create real change here, one focus group at a time.
It will be a long, STUBBORN process but much needed and Much Too Late. We will do better.
