As inconceivable as it is right now, there have been other dogs, and there may be other dogs… but as far as I’m concerned he was the only dog. The best dog… Our best boy, and there will only ever be one of him. An irreplaceable little being who brought such joy to everyone. Slim - aka Slimbo, Sausage, Little Shitzoo, Chunky Monkey… whatever his moniker of the moment. My heart breaks to think I won’t have him jumping against the back of my knees when I’m chopping vegetables, playing with the stuffed St Bernard that was nearly as old as he was (and about as manky too) or the fact that silence now deafens in the void once filled with his sonorous snores as he lay snuggled up with @katerinafurrer . My sweet little monster… I hope you’re enjoying all the sparkling wines, salmon sashimi, pork ragu and chopped cucumber that the great meadow in the sky has to offer. Some may say you got lucky, but really, to be your pack…we were the lucky ones.
The first photo on my phone of you to the last (a silly dog one in between bc why not)… from the first moment we met I’ve been utterly captivated and obsessed. Not only are you the most interesting person I’ve met but you’re the smartest, sexiest, funniest and most inspiring girl out there. Like one of those goddess/countess/seductress types that you think only exists in myth… but you are actually real! It may be your birthday but I feel like I’ve got the best gift. I’m so proud of you and can’t help but fall in love with you more every single day. Happy Birthday baby!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s tricky to sum up the essence of a great trip… the culture so old it’s given birth to countless stories, the people so warm, the blues so ridiculously .. well, blue… you want to turn down the saturation in your eyes (but let’s face it you really don’t). There’s also something special about spending time with your love watching her bathe in both the glorious oceans and also in a part of her history and makeup. Greece… you’re just grand. 🇬🇷
Torino… the gorgeous gem of a city where the crisp morning air was an invitation to start with a caffè corretto, before moving onto a daily feast of beauty, barolo and boar… almost always ending up at Mulassano, deciding over aperitivo if dinner is a want or need kind-of situation….
The first is a stolen photo of the woman whose birthday it is today. She’s rare, quite wonderful, alluring, intelligent, drop-dead gorgeous and pretty damn special in my books. Just to bring things down to an earthly (or earthy 🤣) level… the second is an artist’s interpretation of the celebration I’m throwing for her while she’s away. Love you all the much @katerinafurrer
I found this photo sitting on my camera, appropriate as the weekend gone felt like the last, tender caress of summer. Bye-bye warm days… not of wine and roses but champagne and berries. Actually… champagne is perennial, right? And I’ll swap the berries for tart jam on slice of warm, buttery toast on a rainy morning. The colder months aren’t looking so bad after all…

You’ve always been the most interesting person I know. Watching you envision, build and bring to life a labour of love with such thoughtfulness and integrity makes you even more fascinating… I didn’t think that was possible but … here we are! I’m so, so proud of you and the wonderful world you’ve built. Wonderful things by wonderful people, made for wonderful people. 🖤
Pt 3. “The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men”…
A good one for the final day of the year… Our last day in Scotland I was looking forward to a long walk up the hills, exploring the Cairngorms and being in nature. But the night before, over our usual cocktails, we learnt our flight was cancelled and re-booked, so we had to make an early exit right after breakfast. I was sad to be going prematurely. But, the early drive through the snow-dusted mountains was stunning, and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a pair of antlers pop up near the guard rail. We stopped, and watched in wonder as about 12 deer hopped the rail, crossed the road and climbed the nearby mountain. I’m going to leave this here as a reminder to myself that sometimes things not going to plan can be the best part of a trip… or life.

Highlands pt 2: Where the walls are clad in tartan, the lights are soft, warm and the atmosphere as inviting as that big chair in the corner by the fire… beckoning you to put your feet up. Lulled into a heady daze by the murmur of voices, the crackling of the fire… can it be time for scones? Always. You have to sustain yourself until it’s an appropriate time for either a perfectly shaken cocktail or a wee dram…
