Shot over the course of one intense week in Cali, Colombia, we caught up with director RJ Sanchez (@rj_sanchez ) to discuss his film ‘Barra Brava’ that offers a vérité-style immersion into the world of South America’s most passionate and controversial football supporters, specifically the Barón Rojo Sur barra brava. The film lets the members speak for themselves, captured entirely on 16mm film and underscored by an original synth score. When given the brief “Tell us your love story” by Academy Award-winning director Sean Baker to create a short film, filmmaker R.J. Sanchez returned to a formative teenage experience and dance trend. “I was looking for something that was simple and universal. Even though freak dancing isn’t necessarily a widely known form of dance (the kids in the short had no idea about it, lol) when I would pitch the idea to friends they would immediately recount their own dance floor tribulations. The anxiety of the whole thing, the absurdity of adolescent mating rituals. It definitely struck a nerve with people so I knew I had something interesting. On top of that, shooting a film set around 2006, in South Central LA (where I’m from) and using actual music from when I was in high school was something that sounded fun as hell, I think you can feel that in the film, we had a BLAST!” - R.J.
