Captured by @mereldaantje . SL: Two years ago I opened my own vintage clothing store for female vintage clothing. All the items are curated and mainly from eastern Europa, Italy and France. Living in Amsterdam, I’ve always admired the city’s reputation for freedom, diversity, and self-expression. Coming from my mother who was a punk; I’ve been raised with stories about creative outlet clubs such as Roxy, being photographed on the streets for wearing bold clothing combinations by tourists, the turmoil of job insecurity and social standing which punk fashion reflected. However, in recent years, I’ve noticed the street style has become more restrained, more grey and black color pallete, lacking the unconventionality that used to define it. With my store, I hope to pass on time sentiments from the 70s, 80s, and 90s; reclaiming ground for creatives.

Set in an abandoned diner in Almere, the visual narrative juxtaposes distinctly American stylistic elements, design motifs and iconography against the pastoral backdrop of a Dutch park. Detached from the tyranny of patriarchy and polite society the diner emerges as a liminal space transfiguring into a shield, refuge, and sanctuary for these women. Here we witness our protagonists, adorned in bohemian and rocker attire, manifest a deliberate defiance, countering notions of respectability politics through their carefree poses. However, the presence of American cultural artifacts within the diners walls underscores the inescapable reach of the nation’s dominant global culture, serving as a persistent reminder of the socio-political realities beyond the space.
