‘Bulletproof’ engages with the pervasive nature of respectability politics and America’s cultural hegemony. Set in an abandoned diner in Almere, the visual narrative juxtaposes distinctly American stylistic elements, design motifs and iconography against the pastoral backdrop of a Dutch park. Detached from the tyranny of patriarchy and polite society the diner emerges as a liminal space transfiguring into a shield, refuge, and sanctuary for these women. Here we witness our protagonists, adorned in bohemian and rocker attire, manifest a deliberate defiance, countering notions of respectability politics through their carefree poses. However, the presence of American cultural artifacts within the diners walls underscores the inescapable reach of the nation’s dominant global culture, serving as a persistent reminder of the socio-political realities beyond the space.
