Paying a visit to the immensely impressive Tokyo International Forum by Rafael Viñoly Architects @rva_ny and engineered by SDG Tokyo/Kunio Watanabe. The hull-like roof spans over 200m to rest on just two columns, with arched compression beams interwoven with tension cables to cross the space. The story behind the columns is a wild one - the sheer size of the columns meant that they had to be site-welded from smaller pieces. Nippon Steel at the time had invented a specific fire-rated steel so the columns could remain exposed, but this steel was susceptible to tearing when conventionally welded in stages due to the expansion and contraction from heating and cooling. The solution was to spend 2 months continuously welding 24/7 so the steel never properly cooled down until the column was done. And all of this completed in 1997!

This elliptical roof sits atop of 'Roundhouse' in Palm Beach. The ring beam was fabricated from rolled beams of 4 different radii to create a very close approximation to an ellipse. Architect: @ianbennettarchitecture Builder: @aecocklebuilding Steel Fabrication: @foreshoreengineering

Thank you to @lohas_australia for showing us around the wonderful Clay House last month. This was a beautifully executed collaboration along with @muci_architects and @cumberlandbuild to showcase clay as a building material.  There were plenty of interesting structural details in this house! The extruded clay arch 'Bovedillas' spanning between the steel ribs acted as the permanent formwork for the concrete floor slab without requiring any propping, allowing for thin and efficient floor structures. Hit-miss brick screens bookend the terrace extension, stabilised with horizontal plates and the floating stair was achieved with a hidden steel blade tucked between glazing mullions.
