Surrey 112 has been shortlisted in the Alterations and Additions category at the 2026 NSW Architecture Awards.
The four-storey addition at the rear of the main house is wrapped in off-white bricks in a woven English Bond pattern, harmonious in palette and scale to the rendered Italianate terrace. Within this rear addition is a sequence of contemporary spaces, in the form of four siloes in a quatrefoil arrangement, drawing light into the house. The dramatic double height form plays with the light from concealed windows, bouncing off curved and rendered walls.
Congratulations to our clients, collaborators and project team.

A careful restoration of Orama a gracious Victorian villa paired with a restrained concrete and glass pavilion. The project balances detail and simplicity, with the new volume bringing light, space and connection to the garden.
The original house is adapted through precise interventions, supporting daily life and the display of art, while the extension is defined by raw materials and a clear spatial order.
More than a decade on, Orama remains a study in how old and new can work together through contrast, clarity and restraint.

We’re proud to share that Surrey 112 has been shortlisted in the 2026 Australian Interior Design Awards for Residential Design.
A substantial revitalisation of a mid-19th century Victorian terrace in Sydney’s inner city. The project crafts richly rendered spaces within sculptural brick forms, while simultaneously refurbishing the retained ones to pristine condition. Transforming a long-neglected site into a timeless four-bedroom home and studio.

Old meets new.
Amara revisits a Federation Arts and Crafts residence through careful restoration and a contemporary rear addition. At its centre, a double-height living space brings light deep into the plan, anchored by a single tree and framed by a restrained material palette.

A continuous brick interior shapes this space, wrapping walls, ceilings and structure into a single material language. The vaulted arch draws the eye through the room, framing moments of gathering while soft light settles across the textured surface.
Robust yet refined, the brick creates warmth, depth and permanence, extending the architectural expression from exterior to interior in one cohesive gesture.

A morning with @williamsmart at his home above his studio.
Stokes 14 by @smart.design.studio feels calm the second you walk in. It’s warm, quiet, and deeply considered - the kind of place that makes you realise how powerful good restraint can be.
Thank you William for having me along and for sharing your space and your thinking!
