SANDSTONE QUARRY The primary historic sandstone quarries in Pyrmont (which flourished from the 1840s to the 1940s and famously supplied “yellowblock” sandstone) were: Paradise Quarry: Located near Bank, Miller, and Mount Streets. Purgatory Quarry: Located between Wattle Street, Fig Street, and Quarry Street. Hell Hole Quarry: Located north of Quarry Street toward Pyrmont Bridge Road. Half Way Quarry: Located between Miller Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road. Saunders Quarry: The main quarrying operation on the peninsula. These quarries were largely operated by the Saunders family. design @smart.design.studio [email protected]

CHEVRON/ REVERSE The protruding Chevron form of the tower is reversed in the podium, where it is inverted to make the columns between windows the dominant component. Solid spandrels and balustrades help to make a well-insulated sustainable building. design @smart.design.studio [email protected]

PODIUM MASONRY The podium of our Saunders proposal is made from a combination of exfoliated concrete and Sydney sandstone. The offers privacy to these units and marries with neighbouring buildings, as well as the history of the site: as a former stone quarry (see next post for more detail). I love how the curve or the road is embraced and expressed in this façade. design @smart.design.studio [email protected]

THE OTHER SIDE The other side of the tower is orthogonal. Deep articulation in the west facade provides good shading to that glass, while the south facade is faceted to allow diagonal views to the east and west and to create a lenticular effect when viewed from the Anzac bridge (66 million vehicles pass every year). The podium reverses the tower’s zig-zag and is made from sandstone and sandblasted concrete. MODULAR We developed (with advice from engineers and contractors) a precast concrete facade made from modular components that could be twisted to this 3D shape. One single form (with a ‘V’ shape) has sufficient depth and design flexibility to gracefully twist. TWISTING TOWER This proposal for a new tower twists through its northern elevation from a rectangular plan at the top to a triangular one of the base. It does this to respect sunlight to its neighbours and maximise the levels with orthogonal planning. It makes a striking form! BRICK FORM Bold angled blades rise vertically up the tower form, articulating the façade whilst managing views, privacy and the sun. At top, these brick blades terminate in a series of concave roof forms that intersect with the inclined roof, forming a 3-dimensional architectural roof feature. This site used to be a brick pit: supplying the clay for many homes in this area. This connection to its past was one of the reasons we chose to use brick for our building. FUNCTION LEADS FORM The form was generated from a study of sun angles: specifically looking to block the summer sun whilst letting the winter sun in without any moving screens or parts. It really works and it’s quite incredible The concave shape of the balcony combined with the angled blade walls is how this works. It also makes a very distinctive and sculptural building. LACEBARK 81 generous apartments over 12 residential levels plus 2 retail levels and basement parking. To the north of Lacebark are two circular charcoal brick drums nestled into the tower forms. These drums become a beacon to the precinct. Curved glazing on the lower level of the drums allows maximum visibility to the prime retail spaces, which spill out to the landscaped plaza.
