People have an emotional response to timber’s traditional warmth and character. It’s natural, living, and it changes over time, developing patina. It’s wonderful to build with and, if maintained properly, will last forever. Crafting it well is an art, one we’ve refined over 40 years building exceptional architectural houses that last generations.
The Wollondibby Stone Cottage is a heritage restoration project that is defined by restraint. Whether parts of the building were to be retained, to be repaired, or be rebuilt where required, the new work followed the the heritage philosophy of ‘do as much as necessary and as little as possible’.

“You start with a blank sheet of paper then you pass your ideas onto a builder expecting them to deliver on your dream. By engaging Bellevarde, you gain access to an enormous pool of knowledge. Having over 40 years of experience of high quality building with dedicated and intelligent people makes it something special. The systems they have established are just excellent. They are great at keeping a check on costs too. It’s pretty amazing what you get”.

A look back at Bombala Farmhouse, located in Ando, NSW, and built in 1997.
On a sheep property, the house is suspended above the grass, sitting on a grid of slender metal columns.
“We were working in the UK and wanted to get this steel-framed home built in Ando," recalls architect Penny Collins. "We needed a good builder. So we asked every architect we could for references. They all said the same thing: ‘[Bellevarde founder] John Fielding’s the one, he's a great builder’, ‘He’s passionate about quality’, and, ‘He’s a good bloke'.

House Taurus in Sydney’s Point Piper by Durbach Block Jaggers
“The concreting was some of the most complex we have ever undertaken. This was also the most material we’ve ever air-freighted in for a house. There is stone from Switzerland and Indonesia, metal from France, and timber from Holland.
The steep block presented some challenges but site manager, Lewis Townsend, and the Bellevarde team kept everything on track and delivered an excellent result”.

Welcome to Building with Bellevarde: Insights.
In this edition, we cover a wonderful house in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Being set deep in the hillside, the excavation required some ingenious engineering solutions to shift material up the slope.
The resulting multi-storey home features a superb and functional central staircase that offers views to different levels giving a sense of togetherness and privacy.

Located in Balmoral, Almora House by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects sits in a much-loved garden, created by the owners over two decades. The home uses concrete, timber, glass and steel to let the garden in. Its ceiling is an off-form concrete that makes it seem as though the roof is draped over the house.

Madeleine Blanchfield Architects designed Balmoral House (2019) in Mosman, Sydney Australia. Architect statement: “Balmoral House is a simultaneously restrained and assertive piece of design created in dialogue with the natural surroundings and the owners’ Japanese heritage. The existing dwelling was completely reworked and demolished from the ground floor up. Space, light and unfaltering simplicity were at the core of the brief. As was the Japanese concept of “Ma"– negative space, an emptiness full of possibilities.” Built by Adam Howe, Tom Sheridan and the team at Bellevarde Constructions. Photographer: Michael Nicholson.
