As part of the House Transformed exhibition at Princeton University School of Architecture curated by Monica Ponce de Leon, Shoshana Torn and Massimo Giannone, our project investigates a model for increasing density and improving opportunities for alternative housing models in the suburbs to accommodate a mix of occupants and generations.
Shortages in construction workers, lengthy construction times and the resulting high construction costs are contributing to the lack of housing supply.
At the same time demand for age care and childcare places are increasing with an ‘age-in place’ model being encouraged by government to reduce ballooning age care costs.
To reduce construction time and cost, our proposal utilizes a shed structure, traditionally used for industrial and farming purposes. The ‘shed’ can be flat packed, transported to site, constructed in a period of 6 weeks. The modular construction system greatly reduces the construction time and cost. It allows recycling, disassembly and relocation as required. A prefabricated shed also provides a large, flexible and column free space to accommodate a variety of uses, within which lightweight walls can be added and easily adapted in the future. This model can be reconfigured in multiple ways to accommodate different and changing living arrangements. For this project the organizational principle of the shed is loosely based on a ‘9-square-plan’.
