Winner: Australian Certified Timber | 25th Australian Timber Design Awards
In Sydney's Chatswood, Irrawaddy is a home for a family of eight that draws deep inspiration from the timber delta houses of Myanmar's Irrawaddy River. Lightweight pavilions raised on stilts, playful interconnecting spaces for six children, and a ground floor left completely free, the vernacular of the clients' homeland reimagined in suburban Sydney.
With 85% of the structure in timber and 100% certified sourcing, the project sets a benchmark for responsible material use. Salvaged Tallowood from Nullo Mountain forms the entire roof structure, while FSC and PEFC-certified blackbutt runs through every detail, from exposed post-and-beam framing and acoustic battened ceilings to custom doors, windows, joinery and flooring. The architects deliberately excluded imported hardwoods, a commitment informed by the clients' firsthand understanding of destructive forestry in their home country.
Judge Dr Ali Hadigheh shares his thoughts on Irrawaddy. Dr Hadigheh is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Sydney (Senior Lecturer at time of judging), ARC DECRA Fellow and Circular Economy Pillar Lead at the Net Zero Institute.
