Scent is the medium through which predators hunt, flowers deceive insects, and infants recognize their mothers. It has also become a subtle weapon amidst global power structures. 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 ɴᴀʀʀᴀᴛɪᴠᴇꜱ ɪɴ ᴏʟꜰᴀᴄᴛᴏʀʏ ᴅᴇᴄᴇɪᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ᴄᴏɴꜰᴜꜱɪᴏɴ Thursday, April 30 at 7pm 937 Sun Mun Way This talk covers a wide arc of olfactory deception, from Kim Jong-nam’s assassination and the wrongful arrest of Kapil Raghu, to Stasi’s scent archives and scent-detection technologies by the Department of Homeland Security and Amazon. It also explores correlations in the natural world, such as how puff adders evade trained dogs and bolas spiders lure moths with counterfeit pheromones. Additionally, participants are invited to experience scents like YSL Opium, Nina Ricci Premiere Jour (the perfume mistaken by the woman in the UK), UFO Parfums anti-money scent project, and skatole (a component of Skunk). Maxwell Williams (@ufoparfums ) is an olfactory artist, researcher, DJ/producer, and writer based in Los Angeles. Next Thursday, @krista.mileva joins us for a deep dive into the world of artificial caves 🕳️🔦 𝕲𝖗𝖔𝖙𝖙𝖔 𝕿𝖊𝖈𝖍: 𝕬𝖗𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 𝕭𝖊𝖙𝖜𝖊𝖊𝖓 𝕹𝖆𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝕮𝖚𝖑𝖙𝖚𝖗𝖊 Architecture probably began with the human adaptation of caves for domestic and ritual use. For nearly as long, people have also been trying to imitate and even surpass nature by constructing artificial caves, or grottoes. Dripping with cement stalactites, spangled with seashells, sparkling with hydraulic baubles, grottoes are sites of contradiction. At once, they are places of high artifice and material experimentation, and portals to the underworld where empirical rationality loosens its foothold. This talk narrates episodes from the history of the artificial cave, from Antiquity to the Playboy Grotto. Interpreting the grotto as a cultural technology, it explores it as a historical and contemporary system for interrogating the categories of inert and living, playing with spatial and ecological control, and stimulating the senses and the imagination. “𝘈𝘯𝘥, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘰.” Krista Mileva-Frank is a design historian, curator, and critic. Record label and NTS radio show @btwnearthandsky presents UNDERTONE, an intimate listening session centered on sonic excavation and preservation, featuring @spellling , @crueldiagonals , and @lara_sarkissian 📂🔊 Each artist to create a special set responding to the theme of “archive”, interpreted expansively across personal, cultural, sonic, or conceptual dimensions. The archive here may manifest as unfinished compositions, dormant hard drives, field recordings, familial traces, research materials, or sonic documents that have yet to be fully processed. Rather than presenting polished retrospectives, the artists activate fragments; destabilizing the boundary between document and performance. The resulting sets may rework, reinterpret, layer, or expose these materials in new ways. You’re invited to a slower engagement with sound; one that prioritizes attention, texture, and process. An afternoon of live excavation, a temporary space, where stored material is opened, examined, and transformed in real time. Next Thursday evening, @zarapfeifer will present her long-term project Du, meine konkrete Utopie (My Concrete Utopia), focused on the large-scale housing complex Alterlaa in Vienna. Built in the 1970s and 1980s and home to around 10,000 residents, the project examines the communal spaces within the complex, including over 30 resident-run clubs, from jiu-jitsu to ballroom dancing. Over four years, Pfeifer lived on site, met residents, and joined the photo club. Through her work, she reflects on how shared spaces shape everyday life, raising broader questions about collective living and the social fabric of architecture. Zara Pfeifer is an artist and photographer based in Berlin and Vienna, currently a MAK Center Artist-in-Residence Los Angeles. Her work focuses on the social dimensions of large-scale infrastructure. Through long-term, immersive projects, she examines how architecture and logistics shape everyday life. $15 suggested, link in bio 🎟️
