Students at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena are working with algae to create products that work as well as plastic, but won't last thousands of years.
Over 14 weeks students explored the design potential of seaweed and algae (which is what seaweed is made of). All in service of getting at a question posed by architect David Martin, an @artcenteredu trustee who sponsored this class: “How can you make a chair out of seaweed?”

That's a wrap on Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair 2026!
What better way to capture the spirit of this year's analogue extravaganza than by letting our very own Graduate Art Press have the last wise words on this year's event.
toodaloo till next year!
Renowned designer Jason Wu came to ArtCenter for two days and left our students with advice they'll carry for the rest of their careers.
"Some of my most successful things are things I failed at the most. I trust my instincts as a creative and I embrace my mistakes because I don't think they're mistakes. I think it's a journey."
Wu, who rose to international prominence at 26 when Michelle Obama chose his gown for the 2009 Presidential Inaugural Ball, spoke openly about his design process, his collaborations with artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Tong Yang-Tze, and the importance of surrounding yourself with talented people you can trust.
He also met with upper-term students to review their work and offer feedback—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from one of the world's leading designers.
Thank you to Jason Wu, ArtCenter Trustee David C. Martin, Mary Martin, and MADWORKSHOP for making this visit possible.
Both ominous and glamorous, Ed Ruscha's images of gas stations and sun-baked apartment buildings capture a Los Angeles seemingly lost to the mists of time...
But this weekend you'll have the rare opportunity to see selections of his work in person at @printedmatter_artbookfair , hosted by ArtCenter, where @GettyArchive will display selections of Ruscha's ongoing project, "Streets of Los Angeles: Artist, Image, Archive, City," documenting LA's thoroughfares since 1965.
May 8-11, ArtCenter South Campus, 950 South Raymond Avenue.

Senator @sashareneeperez ’s first impression of our Spring 2026 Grad Show? Our students are ready to take the creative economy by storm!
She toured the exhibition space shortly before delivering the keynote address at our Spring 2026 Graduation ceremony, where the entire auditorium erupted into spontaneous applause at least twice during her remarks tracing her journey from the DJ booth into a seat in California's State Senate.
Once all the degrees had been conferred, the Senator headed straight back to Grad Show for a second look at our students’ culminating creations.
