It was confirmed this week that English performer FKA Twigs will portray Josephine Baker in a new biopic directed by Maïmouna Doucouré. Twigs, born Tahliah Debrett Barnett in Cheltenham, started as a backup dancer for singers such as Kylie Minogue before embarking on her solo career in 2012. Since then, the Grammy-winning artist has become a key figure of 'avant-pop', blending multiple popular genres to create an experimental, textured sound that remains accessible to the mainstream. An acclaimed entertainer of the Jazz Age, Baker became the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture when she played the lead in the French silent film 'Siren of the Tropics' in 1927. Her achievements outside of the entertainment industry match her significance on stage – from her part in the French Resistance during World War II to her vocal support of the American Civil Rights Movement. Swipe through to see: 1. On this day 220 years ago, a 'cocktail' was defined for the first time in a New York newspaper, The Balance and Columbian Repository, as “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters". From a crisp Martini to the Madonna-endorsed Cosmopolitan, thousands of cocktail recipes now exist since that publication in 1806. 📷️: Circa 1930 | General Photographic Agency | #GettyImages #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #worldcocktailday #cocktail #martini #cosmo #portrait #blackandwhitephotography #1930s #onthisdayinhistory #onthisday #archivephoto #photoarchive #vintagephoto #photolibrary #heritage #historyonfilm #historythroughalens

"It is not the apparatus that chooses the picture, but the man who wields it" Peter Henry Emerson, who was born on this day in 1856. The British writer and photographer became known for his images of rural life in East Anglia, captured with a naturalistic lens that rejected staging or retouching. Through his writings and photographic practice, Emerson played a crucial role in shaping the medium as an art form, not merely a mechanical process. Swipe through to see: 1. This photograph, taken in July 1944, depicts an extraordinarily sad scene in the aftermath of a V1 attack. Following a deadly strike in the Highland Road and Lunham Road district of Upper Norwood, London, an unidentified man sits on the pile of rubble that was once his home. The man had been for a walk as his wife prepared the Sunday lunch, and returned to find that his house had been destroyed and his wife killed. His dog can be seen at his feet, as Civil Defence workers carry on their work around him. 📷️: FPG/Hulton Archive | #GettyImages #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #historyphotographed #photography #history #vintage

100 years ago today, explorers Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Umberto Nobile, along with 13 others, flew in the airship ‘Norge’ from Ny-lesund in Svalbard, Norway, over the North Pole to Teller in Alaska. This was the first confirmed crossing of the Arctic Ocean. The aircraft was also the first to fly between Europe and America over the polar ice cap. 📷: Bettmann, May 1926 | #GettyImages #PreservingThePast #GettyArchive #northpole #norwegian #svalbard #exploration #adventure #explore
