From Brazil to Hong Kong and straight to the Techathon+ finals 🌍
Celebrating 10 years of Hong Kong Techathon +✨, a global innovation challenge that started from a simple conversation and became a powerful launchpad for real ventures shaping the future.
This year, the event brought together 470+ teams from around the world, with 172 finalists from 13 regions gathering in Hong Kong. We’re incredibly proud that Phycolabs was one of them, crossing the planet to be present at the finale, hosted by the @hksciencepark
It was inspiring to connect with so many brilliant people, exchange ideas, and witness truly disruptive solutions. Seeing what our peers are building makes us genuinely believe that the future can be better than the present.
Beyond the pitches and panels, it was also about people:
making new friends, and reuniting with familiar faces from @929challenge , Complear, and Azores Life Science, moments that made the journey even more special.
Grateful for the conversations, the energy, and the shared belief that innovation can (and should) drive positive change.
Here’s to the next decade of bold ideas, global collaboration, and building what comes next.

Behind the seaweed: biomaterials hit massive walls on the road to market, sky-high R&D costs, endless regulatory hoops, and supply chains that fluctuate with seasons and seaweed genetics. Scaling from lab wins to factory reality? Slow and brutal.
But here’s the strategy to be inspired by: Design for scalability upfront with DfAM (Design for Additive Manufacturing) principles, prioritizing fiber performance, consistent yields, and reducing waste, processes that slot seamlessly into existing textile mills.
Building something big & new takes time.
We’re building Phycolabs this way: transparently, step by step.

Proud to share that Phycolabs was selected as a winner of the @929challenge , securing 2nd place among international startups ✨
The 929 Summit showcased the strength of Asia’s innovation ecosystem, bringing together founders, investors, and industry leaders driving climate and deep-tech solutions.
Beyond technology and impact, one thing united us: our shared language, Portuguese.
Grateful for the exchanges, connections, and momentum along this journey.

#FPA2LatinAmerica
It was an honor to represent Phycolabs as one of the Latin America #Changemakers during the inauguration of the Latin America branch of the @fondationprincealbert2 in São Paulo.
On the same day, Building Tomorrow, Together brought together young entrepreneurs, students, and leaders at @nafaap to discuss some of today’s most urgent environmental challenges.
As highlighted by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco:
“Sustainable innovation is no longer a choice. It is a necessity.”
Building bridges toward a more resilient future. 🌍✨

We’re honored to announce that we will be part of the GCA Alumni Exhibition 2025 in London, celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Global Change Award.
Hosted by the @hmfoundation in partnership with @themillsfabrica_uk , the one-month exhibition at Fabrica X spotlights 21 visionary alumni shaping the future of textiles with disruptive innovations and paving the way toward a net-zero 2050.
Being featured among such inspiring changemakers is a true privilege and we’re proud to share Phycolabs’ seaweed-to-fiber journey on this global stage.
We’re not just watching history unfold; we are eyewitnesses to it. 🌍
The Global Change Award is open for nominations – and Phycolabs is proud to be part of the search.
We’re partnering up with @hmfoundation to find early-stage innovators with bold ideas that can decarbonise fashion and transform the textile industry from within.
Think: next-gen dyes, circular consumption models, radical new fibres, zero-waste systems. The kind of ideas that challenge the status quo – and urgently need backing.
Winners get €200,000 and a year-long Changemaker Programme designed to turn their potential into turn their potential into impact.
It’s a life-changing opportunity that will take your technology to the next level.

Our journey with Seaweed fiber goes beyond science and sustainability, it’s also includes people. By partnering with small-scale seaweed producers, we create a supply chain that empowers coastal communities, generates income, and strengthens local economies. Together, we’re proving that innovation can be regenerative for the planet and also for the people who care for it.

What public commitments do you expect to see at COP30?
For us at Phycolabs, rethinking fashion starts with rethinking the materials we use. Seaweed-based fibers have the power to shift textiles from extractive to regenerative, from linear to circular.
But to unlock this potential, we need more than innovation alone. At COP30, we hope to see policies and regulations that support sustainable materials, accelerate circular systems, and ensure fashion becomes a true force for restoration. COP30 is not only about negotiations, it’s about setting the frameworks that will turn ambition into action.
What about you?
Which policy shifts do you believe are most urgent for fashion?
We’re so proud to have been part of Rio Innovation Week 2025 and adding our voice to such an incredible conversation about the future of the textile industry.
At BRIFW, we joined the panel “Cotton, Biotechnology, Blockchain and Global Macro Trends of the New Fashion System”, presented by Santista Jeanswear, to share our seaweed-to-fiber journey and explore how ethics, sustainability, and innovation are reshaping fashion in Brazil and around the world.
Huge thanks to Olivia Merquior e to everyone who made this exchange so inspiring!
