Commemorating the Jack Yates High School centennial, this exhibition honors the photographic legacy of students and legendary mentor Ray Carrington III. It revisits the origins of the acclaimed Eye on Houston series, drawing from a rich archive of student work and ephemera to preserve the neighborhoodâs storied cultural landscape.
By bridging Carringtonâs historical tenure with contemporary student imagery, the collection sparks a vital cross-generational dialogue. A partnership between the JY Photo Lab and Third Ward Cultural District, this retrospective amplifies youth voices, reinforcing a century-long tradition of pride, excellence, and artistic vibrancy within the Third Ward.
Building on a thirty-year legacy, the partnership between the Jack Yates Photography program and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston remains vital today, with Eye on Houston: An Eye on Third Ward currently on view through Winter 2027.

â Gold Was Made Faâ Her is proud to announce our partnership with FotoFest to award a scholarship for The Meeting Place 2026 Portfolio Review to Houston-based artist Phalyn Honora.
The FotoFest Meeting Place Portfolio Review is the largest and longest-running photography portfolio review event in the United States. It connects artists with international arts professionals for focused one-on-one reviews, professional development, and creative exchange during the FotoFest Biennial 2026, taking place March 12â16 in Houston, Texas.
â Phalyn Honora (b. 2001) is an experimental artist working in Houston, TX with alternative photography, sculpture, and film. She examines the complexity of humanity and identity; analyzing forms of destruction, and the paths to the pursuit of collective liberation. Her work is conceptualized through existential and sociological lenses, particularly within the contexts of her experience as a Black, queer woman in America. She understands the urgency to respond to the needs of her community, and also centers her practice in social sculpture. Honoraâs work has been featured in group shows at the Blaffer Art Museum, the Eldorado Ballroom, and SANMAN Studios. Among these, she has also participated in the Summer Studios Artist Residency at Project Row Houses in 2023, and SANMAN Studiosâ artist-in-residence program in collaboration with FLATS Film Lab in 2025.
Gold Was Made Faâ Her extends our deepest gratitude to MPB for funding this scholarship and to FotoFest for supporting our commitment to radical care by ensuring Black women artists have the resources, visibility, and access needed to self-sustain and grow their practices. đš

for the past nine months i've been thinking and experimenting and studying at @sanmanstudios + @thereadingroom.htx + @flatspresents
i developed my ideas on constructs and the ways constructed systems, ideals, and mentalities may restrict our ability to realize our fullness as humans. i'm playing around with figurative abstraction through silhouettes of human bodies, and material manipulation to visualize my understandings of this. how are we constructed (socially, materially, personally, etc.), and in what ways are we limited? how do we deconstruct these ideas internally and externally?
it was so great to get back in the darkroom at FLATS after leaning away from film for a few years. i am so full having been afforded the resources to experiment to my heart's desire. this journey has been so fun, sometimes exhausting and scary, but i am very grateful to have been guided and supported by such amazing community leaders in the arts here in Houston. i love y'all đĽš
please go see what myself, Corey Sherrard Jr. @cds__j and Kaelyn Provost @strwbrrykaewi have created at SANMAN until January 11, 2026!

Meet Phalyn Honora, an experimental photographer from Houston, Texas.
Phalynâs body of work explores her internal observations of the world. Using analog photography as her medium, Phalynâs art is organic and intentional. Her process draws on her inner ruminations and sociological theories to frame her work. Honora creates despite the many systems that operate to challenge her existence and this is shown in her dynamic and thought-provoking work.
Phalyn is apart of the SANMAN Art Residency 2025 Cohort in collaboration with FLATS (@flatspresents ), an artist-run photography space located in the heart of Houstonâs Montrose neighborhood. FLATS provided access to their 24-hour photo lab and community darkroom throughout Phalyns residency.
Come see her work at their upcoming exhibition âTime Stampâ. On view from November 8 - January 11 | Opening Exhibition will be November 8th from 6-9PM. (RSVP link in bio)
