Our Word for ‘Studio’ is part of
@othernetwork.io Local Events series, which connects artists and independent art spaces through collaborative projects, research, and exhibitions across Africa and beyond.
This exhibition brings together Wyssolela Moreira, Minenkulu Ngoyi, and Nathaniel Sheppard III, in collaboration with Samantha Modisenyane, to explore the studio as a site of making, memory, and shared practice. The project reflects on historic African centres of art production and cultural preservation that existed before colonial concepts of the “modern” studio, while also considering the studio today as a space for independence, experimentation, and community.
Through a series of video installations, the artists investigate how movement, memory, identity, and material ritual shape artistic expression. Drawing on African cosmologies, decolonial spiritualities, archival reconstruction, and body-place relationships, the works use visual languages of layering, remixing, and reconfiguring images - echoing techniques found in printmaking, collage, and surface-making.
