The last few years have been proper daft. In particular @jamesbuttonfilms , many of these projects wouldn’t exist without this silly man. Extra special shoutout to @splonkcomedy , our shiny new production company, which managed to bag two commissioned projects in its first year. Beginner’s luck I reckon. 🐑 at the 🅱️🅱️🌊 Comedy Festival!? Even the BBC won’t take our performance ART seriously and has branded it a ‘comedy’…!? 🤬🐑 We will simply have to go to boycott! After the festivities of Glasgow and Belfast’s BBC Comedy Festivals- we’re feeling simply sheepish to be taking part this time. So off we go from Brecon to Liverpool next week…and this time to sheer our art. (As well as mingle, meet and drink with the beeb royalty of course). Spot the sheep… 🐑 True story: I was sat in @picturehousecentral in January, after screening ‘1 In 5 Sheep’ at @curzon.soho for @londonshortfilmfest and during the ads, I was like, I’d bloody love to screen here…so genuinely Googled what film festivals screen there and that was when I read about @picturehouses Create and thought, why not and submitted. But I did NOT expect that our silly (but of course deadly serious) art short would be there in SCREEN 1 just a few months later 🤯 Thank you to @lucyfenwickelliott and the whole @picentfilms team for curating such a brilliant film festival experience. And congrats to the other 9 films and their makers- such an eclectic bunch 🙌 Made so many new friends! Oh and thanks to winner @lialeexiv and @davidsheldrick for the midnight dumplings and bobaa cocktails at the after-after party…perfectly washed down all the pick’n’mix 🍸Oh and thanks @netflixuk ❤️ What a night. Retro-futuristic absurdist sci-fi short 'Benji' writer/director @oscargarth talks to us about creating the infomercial style of the film to pitch a garbage disposal system of the future, all the while mixing its dark humour with deep existential dread. He also discusses working with his actors to bring their dialogue-free characters to life, the design and manufacture of the titular Benji units, and the VFX employed to create a spectacular haunting final sequence. A dream cinema ticked off the list! -Screened at @ffilmcymruwales supported @adracymru at the @riverfrontarts last week…at an aptly arty showcase of contemporary art films 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 -Nominated for 5 awards inc Best UK Short at the @bifa_film recognised @sundshortsfilm where Quackening premiered last year! Thanks @chrisjallan 🍻 🦆 THE QUACKENING 🦆 -Official selection at the @baftacymru recognised @focuswales @focuswalesfilm in Wrexham, where Sheep premiered last year! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 -8 award nominations at @indiefilmfests member @wtonfilmfest inc. That’s a Splonkin’ wrap! Second comedy commission in the first year of our new indie production company @splonkcomedy 🧡🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Can’t say too much yet but we had a blast bringing this mad one to life. Top tier Welsh cast including @osian.hw.morgan (Under Salt Marsh, Waterloo Road, Mr Burton) & @maliharriesdirector (Hinterland, Foyle’s War, The Way) …and a very special (double!) role for stand-up legend @steffanevanscomedy ⭐️ Yet another set build by @phoebeferndesigns at the Splonk HQ office in Brecon - featuring more prosthetic wizardry from @elliebaldwinfx & gonna be some monstrous VFX from @paulmarke 🙌 Always the best time making our fun things our fun way with fun friends old and new. Very happy to be bringing dir. @alunrhysmorgan ‘s (true?) story to life! Our baaaaaa-art keeps spreading. 🚀 What a blast(-off) we had at the Sci-fi screening at the last edition of Sunderland Shorts! Featured in the screening we had Oscar Garth’s brilliant darkly comic BENJI where recycling is taken to the next level, Pardeep Sahota’s turbulent tech love story OK/NOTOK and Mora Carew’s PAINT which sees a struggling artist exploring with how to connect to their audience. We were delighted to be joined by the directors who gave some fantastic insight into their process at a Q&A following the screening. Last night in Soho… A @curzoncinemas was actually the last UK cinema on my hitlist of dream cinemas I dreamed to screen at! And @splonkcomedy just did it for the @bafta & @bifa_film recognised super fancy @londonshortfilmfest 🐑 I even accidentally represented @morrisons with my bag of sheep costume and slippers (only freshly out of character of course). I haven’t seen anyone laugh at a bag for life as much as @paulmarke ❤️ We started shooting this very serious and not silly at all ARTy experimental short whilst on loliday in Scotland during @shortcomfilmfestival back in 2023- just 3 friends camping (unprepared) in the highlands- with some 16mm and some wool- so super bizarre to see it protected so grandly in a posh cinem like @curzon.soho .
