I’m obsessed with imperfection. The rough, the almost, the try again. Give it to me and I’ll never get bored. As long as there is a soul behind it that keeps trying again to do something, sometimes screaming out in moments of eye contact or an outburst of emotion. I love using choreography as an arena in which the main event is getting back up after being knocked down. This approach makes me lean in to see what the performer will do, how will they problem solve, how do they react to the unscripted. I find so much beauty in this moment from the studio with @asapgamble and @sa1mita working on Bastards of the Sun, dealing with the challenge in this scene- a simple contradiction of objectives, the foundation of drama. She wants him to look at her, better yet- to see her, all he’s trying to do is look away. The struggle between them and their attempts to pursue their goals outshines any preciousness I may have felt to the choreography, and as my lense scans through them in the moment I love what it spontaneously reveals. It’s here! My single, It’s Not There, is out everywhere today! Featuring @angelolsenmusic written by @sharonvanhalen @eliotkrimsky myself and @cee_taylor . I first heard a demo of the song in 2002. The chorus rung in my ear for years! I asked Sharon if she was open to me building it out and putting it on my album. She barely remembered it! But was happy for me to run with it. The lyrics kept making me think of how we never get to go back to who we were before we have kids. We look for our old selves like crazy, but eventually we just have to throw up our hands and lean in. Thank you to @omridru and @zinazzz for embodying that initiation and struggle through dance. Thank you to my brilliant co writer, pianist @eliotkrimsky and producer and engineer @cee_taylor for playing bass, flute, sax, clarinet and singing. You created such a dreamy soundscape that is now this album. Thank you @mordecaimoroh for also engineering and being my cheerleader during vocal takes!
