Cinematography Practise 🎥

I’m thinking of switching things up a little and entering a new chapter on my socials, showing more of the quiet work that goes on behind the scenes as I progress through my cinematography journey: the light studies, the framing tests, the endless quiet moments of slow progress and never ending experimentation.

I haven’t shared much of this with you but the reality is that for the past few years I’ve spent countless hours of my time educating myself about light, composition, colour and cinematic techniques. When most people sleep I’m still awake, trying, testing, experimenting. I’m completely addicted! I love it so much but I haven’t shared much of this process with anyone and it’s getting lonely. So I’m thinking to start to show you more of the behind the scenes of what goes on in my solo cinematic world. Let me know your thoughts and if it’s something you would be interested in?

Building this rig up over the last few weeks has been so much fun and filming this video was actually crazy! @adamdekell and I stayed up until 1am as we ended up doing a creative portrait sesh straight after this, video on that one is incoming.

I’m really impressed with this app, it’s given me access to a tool that I wouldn’t normally be able to afford. I also love that it’s incorporate into my phone meaning I need to carry one less thing onto set!

NOTE: Just a quick note on the accuracy of the app … if you are measuring through diffusion that is when the discrepancies usually happen otherwise it’s generally very close in a Kelvin to an actual meter. For example a light set to 5200K could have a reading of 4950K just purely due to the diffusion giving a colour cast. Also, you can measure off your hand to give the best values for skin tones.

Cinematography Practise 🎥
This was fun! I sat in my woman cave for a whole afternoon and evening to create these five shots. Learnt a lot. No one to bounce ideas off, no one to ask questions to, just me by myself fully locked in. Working alone is not my idea of fun but I have to say there was something cathartic about this solo expedition.
For those interested about the technicalities, it was all lit on location. I didn’t do any post colour grading at all except for a tiny adjustment to the highlight colour of the first shot and a small increase in overall exposure of the second. Otherwise it was just a straight log to rec.709 conversion on all the shots, no other adjustments at all. I’m pretty happy with the outcome overall. The task pushed me to think about storytelling in simple short frames, composition, light and creating contrast in a frame without relying on post processing. It wasn’t an easy doing this in a very small room with white walls but I think it turned out ok. What do you think? Feedback and any tips for future videos always welcome, keen to learn and improve.
Shoot out to @aputure.lighting@amarancreators for making great lights! I’ve converted my whole kit completely over to them now so you’ll be seeing more videos with their lights being used.
The camera used was the Sony A7V with the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens And yes, that is a soft launch on a new camera I have and a brand switch! Stayed tuned for more updates, quite excited for this, really liking my experience with the new cam so far! @sonyalpha.anz@sonycine

I’m using this rig for the Fujifilm X-M5 camera but it’s a universal rig meaning one rig fits many different camera models. I thought I’d have to spend money on a cage but I worked out that I can just put my camera straight onto it using the standard tripod receiving screw built into most cameras so no extras required. I love the way the handle feels in the hand, it’s hard to explain on paper but it just feels right, comfortable and secure.

If you have any specific questions don’t hesitate to ask either myself or Rigid.Pro direct, they’re prompt with their replies which is another important thing for me when choosing a brand to go with for gear. It’s one thing to get the gear but after market service is also very important if you need any help down the road.
