Coming May 30th & 31st: the part of cinematography no one teaches. A mentorship for cinematographers stepping into their first features or navigating the years where everything starts to get real. How you get the job. How you prep, collaborate, and make decisions under pressure. How you lead a crew. How you hold your ground. How you protect your voice within constraints and on-set politics. Over one intensive weekend, you virtually shadow Natasha Braier ASC, ADF through the full arc of a project, then we break it down live, with space for the questions that are usually left out. Off the record. Unfiltered. Said as it is. The weekend is just the beginning. The connection and support continue year-round, with live Q&As and a private Discord group. We already opened this to the existing DEEP-LIGHT community first and half of the spots are already gone. Last year sold out in two weeks. If this resonates, check the program now & book your spot. I created this mentorship because I remember how lonely and overwhelming the jump into bigger projects felt when I was starting. Not so much the technical side, but the human side. Walking into rooms where everyone expected me to have answers. Leading bigger crews for the first time. Navigating directors, producers, pressure, insecurity, politics, self doubt, imposter syndrome… while trying not to lose my own voice inside all of it. Nobody really talks openly about that part of the job, but honestly, it’s the biggest part of the job, and the hardest. Especially in those first years when things finally start opening up and you suddenly realize this career can also become emotionally brutal. I created this for the people arriving at that chapter now. The ones about to do their first features, or their first “real” jump. The ones feeling excited and terrified at the same time. This mentorship is meant to help you navigate that transition with more clarity, support, honesty, and less isolation than I had when I went through it. I only run it once a year with a small group of cinematographers. This year we begin May 30–31 with an intensive live online weekend, and there’s only a few spots left. Link in bio.

This Sunday, DEEP-LIGHT Cine Club begins with Malcolm X and a live conversation with cinematographer Ernest Dickerson ASC This isn’t a passive watch-along, you’re not sitting in the audience: you’re at the table. So bring your questions, your perspective, your curiosity, and join a real conversation about the craft, the choices, and the impact of a film that marked and era and became part of Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s cinematic DNA. The films that shape us deserve deeper conversations than a comment section. See you Sunday! Powered by @shotdeck @ernest_dickerson @addp #cine-club #malcomx

When I started DEEP-LIGHT, it came from feeling there was a huge gap between the technical side of cinematography education and the actual human experience of building a career and finding your voice inside this industry. I wanted to create the kind of space I wish had existed earlier in my own journey. With real conversations , community and mentorship. A place where cinematographers could talk openly about the parts of the work nobody really teaches and support each other. Watching this community grow so organically and so fast over the last year has been pretty emotional honestly. It makes me realize how many people were looking for the same thing. Really grateful to everyone who has joined us and helped build this into something much bigger than a mentorship program. Full article now up on Cinematography World. Link in bio.

This Sunday we launch the very first DEEP-LIGHT Cine Club. Inspired by one of Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s most influential films, we’ll be revisiting MALCOLM X with legendary cinematographer Ernest Dickerson in a live online conversation and open Q&A with the community. No stage. Just cinematographers sitting together talking process, images, stories, and craft. Pull up a chair and bring all your questions. Free and open to the public. Powered by ShotDeck, who will also be giving away a few subscriptions and prizes to attendees joining us live. Register through the link in bio. #malcolmx @shotdeck #cineclub #cine-club #through-their-eyes @ernest_dickerson

When people first join the mentorship, they often think the missing piece is technical. But after a certain point, most cinematographers realize the harder part is something else entirely. How to trust your instincts and stop second-guessing yourself. How to navigate pressure, politics, collaboration and expectation without losing your voice in the process. That transition from imitation into authorship is a big part of what this mentorship is really about. These images are from cinematographer Tristan Salas in the Philippines, one of the Natasha’s mentees in the program. Seeing people develop stronger confidence in their unique way of seeing, while making work that feels deeply personal to them, has become one of the most rewarding parts of building DEEP-LIGHT. This year’s live edition of the mentorship takes place May 30–31. We still have a some spots left, and you can apply for the LUX scholarship until May 16th. Payment plans available.
