Cottage-scaled entry and reorienting on the laneway corner. The entry courtyard is a semi-social space, which includes the kitchen garden, and provides a place to chat with the neighbours. Clifton Hill House.

Brunswick Apartment: Awarded as the winner of the 2021 HOUSES Awards- Apartment or Unit category. We are super pleased to receive this recognition from a jury we admire greatly, alongside such incredible projects.
When considering changes to the apartment, it felt important to learn from what was there already, and what had lasted. Subtle but considered design, colour, as well as materials of a particular quality and durability. We wanted to think carefully about what not to change, as much as what to add, so that which is new would continue the story of the existing place.
Thank you @esther_stewart for a very fun collaboration. Much kudos and thanks goes to joiner Alex Rains of Lex Furniture, builder Mark Borkowski @ultimateoutdoorco and to @benhoskingphotographer for the beautiful photographs.
Thank you to the jury, @housesmagazine and the Architecture Media team @katelinbutler

Alterations to existing multiple housing dwellings are often limited to internal changes, through challenges relating to owner’s corp. negotiations. To extend internal sight lines and bring more natural light into the kitchen, a skylight void is framed within the existing ceiling space: angled in-line-with, but not touching the roof framing. Glass roof tiles replace existing clay tiles, like-for-like, introducing a view of the sky, and revealing a previously hidden structural space.
.
The ceiling is insulated and the roof-window is double-glazed, to minimise additional heat gain and retain winter warmth.
