I’m really proud of this one. 5 years ago, when I started at Folklife, I envisioned a new concept for the Cultural Focus that looked at cultural philosophies that were universal and had connection throughout all peoples. This year marks the end of that series. Roughly translated:
Metamorphosis - Change
Lagom - Balance
Meraki - Passion
Ikigai - Purpose
Ubuntu - Humanity
These themes weave together as a kind of blueprint for how we can navigate our individual and collective paths, where the idea of “Folk” isn’t a genre, but rather a way to understand the intersections of ourselves and our communities and how we relate and belong to each other.
I’m really proud of this years program guide. The artists that created the design. The designers that put it together. My colleagues that put together its contents (in the guide and in practice). The audiences, artists, and culture bearers that guide our work at Northwest Folklife.
Nothing happens by itself. Everything requires flexibility, grounding, soul, intention, and humility. That’s what this series represents.
I hope to see you in a few weeks at our 55th Annual Folklife Festival. It’s gonna be good!
Come hang out with me at The Royal Room for the Quilt Sessions live room pre-recording sessions for our digital festival. Get a beer, some food, listen to music, be social. With me! Music til 9pm!
I’ve take the last 3 months off from drinking. It’s been…sobering. Ha. But I’m happy to re-engage with a beer from @metierbrewing in the CD, for the monthly Folklife series I curate. This month and next, we have the incredible @kit jordan and guests! See ya down here!
Join Ben and Reese for the second Quilt Session at The Royal Room this Tuesday at 6:30pm!
They will continue sharing their knowledge about cultural preservation that is accessible to the community through streaming events and hosted on Northwest Folklife’s Archive.
The session will be followed by a musical performance too.
More Quilt Sessions to come every Tuesday in April, stay tuned!
