Tape memories: Presentation & Listening session with Tape Letters Friday 24 April 2026 ⏰7-9 pm 📍Black Archives Sweden, Falkenbergsgatan 4A, Malmö Door opens: 7 pm Event starts: 7.30 pm Join us for a presentation and listening session with Wajid Yaseen, exploring Tape Letters, a project built from intimate cassette recordings sent between Pakistan and the UK from the 1960s to 1980s. In this session, we listen together to selections from these recordings and reflect on what they reveal about memory, communication, and belonging. Through a selection of testimonies and archival cassette recordings, the presentation opens up the intimate sonic world of the archive and the stories it holds. The session invites the audience into a shared act of listening, where the archive is encountered not only as material but as a lived, resonant, and affective space. 📼 About the Tape Letters: Tape Letters is a social history project shining a light on the practice of recording and sending messages on cassette tape as an unorthodox method of communication by Pakistanis who migrated and settled in the UK between 1960-1980. Drawing directly both from first-hand interviews and from the informal and intimate conversations on the cassettes themselves, the project seeks to unearth and archive a portrait of this method of communication, as practised by the British-Pakistani community, commenting on their experiences of migration and identity, on the unorthodox use of cassette tape technology, and on the languages used in the recordings. 💫Stay tuned for more about Wajid Yaseen, Creative director of Modus Arts: @modusarts 🔗Läs om eventet på svenska via länken i bio *** Graphic design: Linda Hallstan Tape Memories is supported by Riksantikvarieämbetet.

SoundHoppers Seniors launched in Manchester this Spring. A new sonic arts programme for older people in Tameside, exploring sound and wellbeing. Taking part in deep listening, sound making, recording and reflection, participants will develop practical skills and learn about different sound art themes. We are working with @ageuktameside , and Holy Trinity Church and Community Centre. At the end of the project, we will host a celebration listening event sharing a collective soundscape created with the groups. It’s an exciting project for Modus Arts, working with a new audience, to see how sound art interplays with wellbeing, and what we can learn about the hearing differences of older citizens. The project is facilitated by @sonamb__ and @hayleysuviste SoundHoppers Seniors is supported by the Robin Estill Fund, Action Together. #actiontogether #greatermanchester #artsandhealth #inclusivearts #artscouncilsupported Photos: @richtymon

Sandbox continues as a space for artists to share work in development and open up their process to a live audience. During our latest edition, @kathyhinde presented Magnetic Resonance, an evolving installation exploring the interaction between magnetic force, movement, light and sound. The work unfolded in real time through a system of pendulums and responsive elements, inviting close attention to subtle shifts. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the experience. Sandbox is facilitated by @modusarts as an ongoing platform for sharing practice and supporting experimental work. Photos: @richtymon #modusarts #sandbox #soundart #contemporaryart #manchesterevents

Modus Arts @modusarts are returning on Saturday 13 Sep, 12.30-2pm with their popular kids workshop 'Creative Sound with Soundhoppers'. For ages 5-11. The workshop will use a series of gamified listening exercises to explore various aspects of sound – whether that’s proximity (how far or close a sound is), timbre (the tonality and type of sound), or volume (how loud or quiet a sound is). Children are given access to specially constructed soundboxes, transducers and other sound-generating devices to explore how sound travels through various materials and objects, and how people experience sound differently. Places are limited so please book tickets via the festival website. #markfieldroadfestival2025 #kidsworkshop #soundworkshop
