The Garden Cinema presents
๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ /// 24 May- 18 Aug ๐
There has never been such a successful collision of silliness and sophistication in the history of cinema as the Screwball Comedy. Speedy dialogue, couplesโ quarrels, and slapstick are inseparable from razor-sharp wit, and some of the most incisive social commentary of the shifting class and gender dynamics of early twentieth-century America.
Predominantly a 1940s form โ with brilliant exceptions from the 1950s and a few predecessors in the 1930s โ Screwball Comedy was a product of its time. A defiant reaction to the newly imposed Hays Code, it rioted against hypocritical conservatism with an abundance of sexual innuendo, a good dose of adultery, and childless (!) couples surrendering to the hedonistic lifestyle of the metropolis. Whisky for breakfast was pretty standardโฆ Their madcap, farcical plots โ ranging from crossdressing to domesticated tigers โ offered much needed escapism to a population still affected by the Great Depression and, later, WWII.
A repertory company emerges. Directors like Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, Frank Capra, Ernst Lubitsch, George Cukor, and Leo McCarey each fine-tuned the genreโs shape, while writers like Ben Hecht and Billy Wilder supplied the verbal velocity and bite. And then there were the stars โ the usual suspects returning again and again: Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, Barbara Stanwyck, and Claudette Colbert opposite Cary Grant, Clark Gable, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and William Powell.

The Garden Cinema presents a selection of films from the last five decades that explore how Argentine society has grappled with the aftermath of the military coup of 1976.
That year, the countryโs armed forces overthrew the democratically elected government and installed a dictatorship as part of the United Statesโ war on communism in Latin America. The military regime unleashed a โDirty Warโ during which 30,000 people were disappeared, thousands executed, and many more imprisoned or exiled. The dictatorship fractured civil society, and its downfall in 1983 ushered in neoliberal economic policies which exacerbated inequalities. In addition, the omertร (code of silence) that surrounded that period had long-lasting legal and psychological consequences. Yet, in the decades that followed, Argentine cinema re-emerged with extraordinary force, confronting the trauma of those years while opening new paths for the countryโs cultural and democratic life.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the coup, The Garden Cinema will be screening a selection of classic award-winning titles and innovative documentaries which reflect how cinema has engaged with the shifting social landscape through the years.
The season was devised with the support of co-curator writer and academic Adam Feinstein, in collaboration with Alborada Films @alboradafilms and Cinema Mentirรฉ @cinema.mentire

Winner of the Golden Lion Best Film prize at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, Father Mother Sister Brother is the eagerly-awaited new film from Jim Jarmusch. Funny, tender and astutely observed, this is an intimate exploration of the universal intricacies of family dynamics. Starring Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat.
๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐๐ง ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ข๐๐ฐ:
Jim Jarmuschโs return to the triptych-structures of his early work earned him a surprise Golden Lion last year. Arguably the most low-key winner of Veniceโs top prize since Sofia Coppolaโs Somewhere in 2010, Father Mother Sister Brother is a film that works according to its own (slow-paced) rhythms, and gentle absurdism โ ever more mellow as Jarmusch himself matures. These three family meetups, full of unspoken history, stilted attempts at connection, and mild passive aggressiveness, recalls something of Yasujiro Ozuโs family dramas. But the pointed repetition of peculiar moments and abstracted lines of dialogue is imbued with a strange humour which is typical of Jarmusch. There is something in that particular insistence on the nature of words which is like modernist poetry. And perhaps the three settings: rural New Jersey, Dublin, and Paris, also attest to this artistic lineage.

The day will commence with our ๐๐ข๐บ ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถ ๐๐ข๐ฏ family screening of the enduring The Princess Bride โ from the sorely missed Rob Reiner. Alternatively, start your day with early screenings of Akira Kurosawaโs epic Seven Samurai, Alain Delon pulling of an intricate heist in Jean-Pierre Melvilleโs Le Cercle Rouge, or Rainer Werner Fassbinderโs spectacular study of love and fascism, The Marriage of Maria Braun.
The afternoon brings a choice of three delights: you can join the ranks of New Yorkโs most privileged in the first of Whit Stillmanโs โurban haute bourgeoisieโ trilogy: Metropolitan. Or you can be driven out of your mind by Anton Walbrook in the original screen adaptation of Gaslight. Alternatively, simply bask in the warmth of Aki Kaurismรคkiโs humanist and deadpan Le Havre.
Our early evening screenings have been specially selected to get you in the party mood. You can have cocktails and spite with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Mike Nicholsโ Whoโs Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, get tangled up in the Wachowski sistersโ neo-noir Bound, or indulge in Wes Andersonโs greatest cinematic confection, The Grand Budapest Hotel.
For those looking to plot a course through the day, end times for each screening can be found on the individual film pages.
To add to the festivities, tickets to all screenings throughout the day will be just ยฃ7.50 each for members and their +1.
