Feeding a growing boy means our kitchen is constantly full of fresh food… and scraps Living in LA, we always have the windows open, so I love not having food scraps sitting around smelling or attracting bugs. We throw everything from peels to egg shells and avocado pits into the @mill Food Recycler and it’s made cleanup way easier while helping cut down on food waste.

In Los Angeles, LA Compost is reconnecting people to where food goes next. We recently chatted with Ryan Jackson, @lacompost ’s Executive Director, about the important connections between soil, food systems, and community. . What began in 2013 as a small, community-led composting project, has grown into a network of 50 active neighborhood compost hubs across Los Angeles County — turning food scraps into soil, supporting urban gardens, and creating spaces where people can actually participate in the loop. Their philosophy is simple: composting isn’t just waste management, it’s a community practice. It connects people to their food, their neighborhoods, and the land beneath them. And in a massive city like LA, where people are so spread apart, that connectivity matters.

t r a s h talking by the numbers: 1/3 of the world’s food production is wasted 10 % of global greenhouse gas emissions is from that food waste = this is the same % as transit (read: food matters more than the car you drive). 20X more greenhouse gas emissions come from throwing food into landfill vs. food recycling or composting “when you change the way you see things, the things you see change.” —wayne dyer trash is all about perspective. in our house, we’ve been trying to shift how we think about food scraps — not as waste, but as something that still has value. what we don’t eat doesn’t have to be the end of the story. with @mill , we’re able to recycle our food scraps right from our kitchen — turning them into dry, odorless grounds that can go back into our garden to help grow more food. it’s a small shift, but it’s helped us start to think about our home as part of a bigger loop. from scraps ~ to grounds ~ back to the garden it’s simple, fits into our routine, and something the whole family can be part of. in our house we have a motto: instead of “why not?” we ask “why do?” and this has been one of those small changes that just makes sense. 📷 @sarahdavis

Food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems— and one of the most solvable. But solving it takes more than good intentions. It takes partners willing to rethink the systems we’ve inherited. This Stop Food Waste Day, our Co-founder & President Harry Tannenbaum joined Compass Group’s 10th annual celebration to share what we’ve been building: Mill Commercial. It’s made for the kitchens where food waste happens at scale— helping teams see what’s getting tossed, understand why, and turn what’s left into something useful. Compass has been a dream partner in bringing our work into the world. They know commercial kitchens. We know food waste. Together, we’re working toward a future where food is valued, waste is designed out, and the loop gets a whole lot tighter. Thank you to @cibchef Chris Ivens-Brown, @compassgroupusa , @foodtank , and Danielle Nierenberg for having these important conversations. We’re honored to be in the room, and even more excited for what comes next.
