The Magic Soil Bus has begun making its journey across LA! 🚌🪱✨ Earlier this year, our newest educational endeavor officially hit the road, making stops at schools, community centers, and public events. Every visit has been nothing short of magical, from gleeful laughter at finding a Roly-Poly in the compost to "a-ha" moments as youth connect the dots between their food scraps, compost, and the healthy soil that helps plants grow. We’ve witnessed how valuable it is for youth to have these experiences. It sparks curiosity, gets them excited to learn, and helps them better understand their role in supporting our local environment. We’re excited to continue expanding Magic Soil Bus visits across LA!

We’re closing out #InternationalCompostAwarenessWeek with a highlight on our favorite way to compost: WITH COMMUNITY! 🙌🏼🪱🌱 From the beginning, we’ve known that composting food scraps is more than diverting food from landfills, it’s a way to build something together and connect with one another. When food scraps are composted locally, the benefits can ripple outward, supporting green jobs, healthier soils, local food systems, and opportunities for environmental learning. 🔗 Learn more about community composting opportunities in LA by visiting the #linkinbio or lacompost.org/start-composting. #icaw2026 #feedthesoil #compost #communitycompost #soilandpeople

May 3rd-9th is International Compost Awareness Week! 🪱🥬🍉🥑 Celebrated on the first week of May, the week is an opportunity to spread the word about the benefits of compost and inspire friends and family to start their compost journey. 🙌🏽 Composting recognizes the interconnectedness between every person who eats and the Earth that provides all of our food, as well as our agency in feeding the earth our scraps so that the soil may continue to provide for us abundantly. Compost grows healthy soil, healthy food, and a healthy California. 🌱 🔗 Visit lacompost.org/start-composting to explore community compost programs near you. #icaw2026 #feedthesoil #compost #soilandpeople

That's a wrap for Earth Month! 🌎✨️ Throughout April, community events brought people together to learn about composting, connect with soil ecosystems, and take free soil resources home. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us across LA. It was inspiring to see so many of you ready to take part in local environmental action. Earth Month may be over, but there are still plenty of ways to get involved. Visit lacompost.org/start-composting to join local community compost efforts in LA.

Many people don’t realize that soil, especially healthy soil, is full of life. 🪱 🧑🏽‍🌾 For my recent episode for Teaching Climate Together, we focused on Composting with @lacompost where I got to work with Alyssa Carillo, Education Program Manager at LA Compost. For this segment, we collected two unique soil samples: one from the street side near the garden and the other inside the community garden to examine how microbes differ. She gave me a 101 lesson on life in the soil. Millions of species and billions of organisms make up a complex, diverse mix of microscopic and macroscopic life that represents the planet’s greatest concentration of biomass. Bacteria, algae, microscopic insects, earthworms, beetles, ants, mites, and fungi are among them. Altogether, their value has been estimated at $1.5 trillion annually worldwide (Source: USDA). Estimates vary, but if you could weigh all the organisms in the top six inches of soil on an acre of land, you’d find they would weigh between 2,500 pounds and more than 5,000 pounds, depending on how healthy the soil is. That is a LOT of life. The healthiest soils are those with a diversity and abundance of life. If you want to watch the full episode, head to my profile bio and click the Composting episode. CalRecycle leaders visited @lacompost this #EarthMonth to see how community-powered composting is growing across LA County. In 2024 alone, they diverted 3.2 million pounds of organic material! From the “Magic Soil Bus” to local compost sites and food‑scrap collection, it was inspiring to see community climate action in motion. ♻️🌎✨
