This month marks one year into the historic partnership between the Los Angeles Zoo and @outwardboundadventures (OBA). OBA is the oldest nonprofit in the nation dedicated to outdoor education for youth of color, providing opportunities for community members from disadvantaged areas of Pasadena and Los Angeles into nature, and creating entryways into a green workforce that has often excluded them. Together, we are working to restore 6 acres of oak woodland habitat inside the Zoo, while also providing this workforce with critical training and skills that will enrich their lives. Check out this story by CBS Los Angeles, spotlighting this partnership and the habitat restoration work happening right here in Los Angeles. SOURCE: @cbsla /CBS Los Angeles

At the @lazoo , a 60-year-old California condor named Topa Topa continues to play a key role in the species’ recovery from near extinction. Part of a long-running breeding and conservation effort, his lineage has helped rebuild a population that once dwindled to just a few dozen birds. The zoo marked his 60th “hatchday” last week, a milestone for one of the program’s most important birds. @tomexploresla stopped by to chat with zoo staff to learn more. If you want to read about Topa Topa, check out lazoo.org

Today is Earth Day! 🌎 In honor of our planet, we’re celebrating Topa Topa the California condor. Topa Topa has lived at the L.A. Zoo since 1967 and turns 60 this month. Topa Topa became a founder of the California condor breeding population in human care to aid in the recovery of the species, and to date, his remarkable lineage includes roughly 300 birds, with 100 currently in the crucial recovery program and 94 flying free in the wild. Read Topa Topa’s incredible story at the Linktree in our bio and show him some love in the comments! #EarthDay #LAZoo #SavingWildlife #CaliforniaCondor

An interesting fact about red-bellied piranhas: they swim together in large groups called shoals, and swim in formation! The younger piranhas patrol the outside edges of the group, while the larger, fully mature adults stay protected right in the center of the action. 🐟 Come see our red-bellied piranha shoal in person on your next visit to the L.A. Zoo when you visit the Rainforest of the Americas.

Today is #EndangeredSpeciesDay! 🌎 We’re spotlighting an extraordinary animal you can visit right here at the L.A. Zoo: the mountain tapir. Native to the cloud forests of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, these incredible creatures are facing a daunting reality. With only an estimated 2,500 left in the world, they are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and lethal infections from screw worms that lay eggs in open wounds caused largely by feral dogs living within the tapirs’ range. But hope is on the horizon. The L.A. Zoo is proud to lead conservation efforts in Colombia alongside incredible partners. Through community science, cutting-edge research, and the construction of a new emergency veterinary care center, we're working to treat ill and injured tapirs to protect the wild population where they live. Come see the mountain tapir in our Animals of South America habitat and learn how you can support our conservation mission! A huge thank you to our partners on this important initiative: @zoologicodecali , @tapirconservation , @carderrisaralda , @alianzadantamontana , and the @sachahuagra_foundation . #Tapir #MountainTapir #Conservation #LAZoo

You can help protect migratory birds, too! Here are three easy ways: ☕ Drink Bird Friendly Coffee: Pick some up at the Zoo’s International Marketplace! 🪟 Prevent Collisions: Install bird-strike stickers on your home windows. 🌿 Plant a Native Garden: Check out our #ProjectPollinator resources in the Linktree in our bio to get your garden started!

The rhinoceros hornbill is a striking bird found in the lowland and foothill forests of Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and the Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia. Their most distinctive trait is their horn-shaped casque on their beak, which could be used for fighting, courtship displays, or getting some fruit from a tall tree. Check out the rhinoceros hornbills at the Animals of Australia section inside the L.A. Zoo! 📸: Zach Rich
