Today, an awesome artist shared their website with me, and I had a little 'aha' moment - Mighty Mono's been out for three months, and I haven't said a word about it yet! 😅The journey of this typeface started during my master's research project at RMIT, where I focused on designing Vietnamese diacritics. Since then, I've expanded the entire family – thanks in part to the extra time the pandemic gave us (who didn't have more time during Covid, right?) and with invaluable feedback and support from other talented type designers and friends!
And now, thanks to @moderntype_ , Mighty Mono is out there for everyone to license! 🛸 Can’t wait to more about the process and the story behind Mighty Mono in my #typetuesday journal (if I can ever stop procrastinating and start writing)! 😄

‘Font Việt hoá’ is often defined as (unofficial) fonts modified from original fonts to support Vietnamese characters. If you search ‘font tiếng Việt’ (Vietnamese fonts) on Google, most results will lead you straight to ‘font Việt hoá’. Growing up, they were part of my and many other Vietnamese people’s culture: somewhat necessary, somewhat accessible, somewhat unofficial, somewhat illegal, but completely fascinating. And somehow, I get to do a PhD at @rmituniversity on it. More soon. 👀✨

🔤🎤🇻🇳🌐 Lưu Chữ’s November was special! We had the opportunity to give a talk about Vietnamese language and graphic design history at AGI Congress 2025 alongside Đông Trúc @do_ngtruc and Lưu Trang @chang.type . We also welcomed AGI members and friends from across the world to our space. So great to meet familiar local and new international friends who all share the same love for type and graphic design! Thank you @thisis.rice for bringing AGI to Vietnam! A special shoutout to Evi @evi_o and Kris @klim_type_foundry for being the best models for our Vietnam t-shirts, a collaboration project with Soulvenir @soulvenir.co 😎

Vietnamese diacritics feel like playing Jenga with your eyes closed? Those tiny marks that need to stack just right, but you’re not sure how because you don’t actually speak Vietnamese?
This September, I’m running a ‘Drawing Vietnamese Diacritics’ workshop with @typeelectives . We’ll figure out how these tiny but mighty marks work, how to draw and stack them properly in Glyphs, and how to keep them from crashing into each other by testing them in context. 🏎️
Whether you’re adding Vietnamese support to your typeface or just want to understand how it all works, come join me!
BYO fonts and I’ll share you everthing I know about Vietnamese diacritics (no promises I will stay on topic if someone asks about Vietnamese food 🤭)
Visit typeelectives.com for details and also check out other amazing workshops by my colleagues!
still recovering from all these cool Thai letters (or just from too much khaosoi) from my Thailand trips earlier this year 😌
