A taste of Tony Albert: Not A Souvenir, a monograph of a Girramay, Yidindji, Kuku Yalanji man - contemporary artist
@tonyalbert .
The publication is edited by
@liznowell and ambitiously features more than 1000 artworks from over 20 years of Tonyās practice. Through his work, he courageously engages in difficult conversations to shed light on problematic histories and current injustices faced by First Nations people. Drawing on both personal and collective histories, his multidisciplinary practice considers the ways in which optimism might be utilised to overcome adversity.
In a weekās time,
@mca_australia is opening a retrospective show in conjunction with the release of Tonyās monograph. Curated by
@brucejohnsonmclean and titled āNot a Souvenirā the show brings together Albertās work across sculpture, photography, installation, painting, and assemblage alongside major new commissions. The exhibition takes inspiration from the MCAās location on Sydney Harbour at Tallawoladah and the surrounding precinct, The Rocks ā a profoundly significant site of early colonial contact, now synonymous with tourism and souvenir culture. It considers the commodification and misrepresentation of Aboriginal people and culture, both historically and today, while celebrating survival and cultural pride.
