I never had a real Barbie when I was a child playing with dress up dolls. I had the knock-offs and I’m almost certain they belonged to my cousin Judy before they were passed on to me. I didn’t know the difference until I was older. Then, I longed for the real thing. Looking back, I had several Barbie dreams. I wanted the glamorous wardrobe and heels in every color, the Barbie beach house, the sports car, the camper, and yes, even Ken. For whatever reason, Barbie never lived in my childhood home. Several years later, after my service in the Marine Corps, a dear friend gave me my first Barbie for Christmas. He’d known the story and hadn’t forgotten. I was 27 years old. A few years later, I bought Marine Barbie. Barbie wore the uniform of each United States military branch, but in her Dress Blue uniform as a Woman Marine, she was stunning. Over time, both Barbies were put away in storage and eventually made brief appearances when my niece’s (or other little girls) visited. Shoes were lost, a cover crushed and dresses torn. Somewhere in storage, Barbie is likely partially dressed at best with her tangled hair in need of a deep conditioner.
A couple months ago, in Denver, I met an artist from Atlanta, #TonyRagunas #methodartz He is the brother of a friend and neighbor. A retired businessman with a passion for paint, Tony’s next chapter in his life is as a Pop Art artist. His work can be seen on billboards around Atlanta and in #hartsfieldjacksonatlantainternationalairport in conjunction with #artpopstreetgallery Among other things, he has a series of paintings that juxtapose classic images with well-known brands. As we talked about his work, I asked if he’d ever painted #Barbie. I remember his face as he said, “Now that’s interesting.”
The conversation evolved and I commissioned a piece. It arrived yesterday unbeknownst to me. The unveiling was a surprise - my neighbor had hung it on his wall with a cover over it, then invited me over on a pretext. There she was! Tony calls her “Louboutin Dreams” but I’ve renamed her “Barbie Lou.” A simple girl with big dreams of beautiful things (and healthy, conditioned blonde hair)! For the record, I own the shoes too.
