Ravinda D. Wibowo

Dangdut Stereo is a performance project that attempts to recreate auditory hallucinations Ravinda D Wibowo frequently experienced in Jakarta circa 2017-2019. These hallucinations, with their floodingly reverberant quality and stereo shifts, of Dangdut music and intrusive thoughts, are reimagined through digital and analog techniques, an immersive wet auditory mix for the audience. By merging Dangdut music and Indonesian horror cinema, the project transforms personal experience into a shared exploration of sound, culture, censorship and collective imagination. Thankful for all the wonderful souls I met this night. Grateful for all the artists in the show presenting bold works together. Special thanks to @shane.levi of @distillerygallery and @radandyli of @nocallnoshowgallery for taking care of my piece. Willful Dialects is up until May 24th (closing performance with @lani.asuncion ) I love being in these group shows. It’s a wonderful feeling of having works converse in a space of particular ideas. Special thanks once again to @yicynthiachen for pulling this anti-survey together, our conversations are highly meaningful to me. While conversing about Glissant’s Poetics of Relation with Yi, she emphasized the importance of the weave as tool of transparency and opacity in cultural production. This was highly considered in my work. The amount of information obscured and overlaid on each other is what we see when we think about machines. A system which brains and guts are carefully protected by a clean put together facade, and therefore births the ‘instrument’. The same way we can frame about thinking of the media. Having acoustic properties play role as political tools for future production of cultural spaces. Intuition, attraction, understanding (Whitehead), and new understandings. The balanced environment is the aim of the strive while certain players attribute to the act of control, sustain, and delay for a harmonized whole composition. Gotong Royong is what we could call it in Indonesia. Materi, zat, pemikiran dan ruang is what traces it back to writings by Tan Malaka. At this point, I am not sure where this sculptural entity will end up. I am looking for a home for preservation of its ideas. But until then, this work is interactive with a gentle play in the open gallery space. A newspaper printed flyer accompanies this piece for further reading materials. In the landscape of accruing deadlines and overtime, on April 18th we hosted our first benefit “Bersama” film screening. Graciously hosted at No Nation, Art Gallery and Tangential Unspace Lab. Thank you to all the artists and filmmakers who participated and thank you all who, came, donated, laughed, and held. All proceeds have been donated to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. There will be more to come, _together

The blockages faced with interactions in time represented by the separation of space. Digital and virtual — geographical and in relation to the sun.
