Aqua Blue is a mysterious substance only known through word of mouth.
This short was created as part of the companion exhibition to the book launch at @studio22nya .

đ„ I find that animating with @procreate is still a pain in the đ , I just wish they would come up with a vector feature because exporting these brushes in png just isnât crisp enough for me. Is there a work around to this? Modifying our cuts also really destroy pixels. What apps would you use instead? Itâs the friendliest portability yet for me, but weâll see about that. #artisttoartist

A year ago we were commissioned by established Indonesian surf rock band The Panturas (@thepanturas ) to produce four fully animated music videos for their instrumental tracks from their latest album. The final video in the series âOmbak Banyu Asmaraâ was mainly inspired from our first internal meeting where we binge watched many animated films. Belladonna of Sadness, Shark Tale, Perfect Blue, Gumball and ultimately Yellow Submarine. The montage of the rooms and the psychedelia of that scene is what inspired us to make this one. The ultimate part of the video, all three friends somehow end up in the same hotel where someone â something was waiting for them. The ending of the series is made to seem celebratory, a homecoming in a way. Returning to the arms of âmotherâ.
Studio Cacing had developed the story, designed all characters in the videos and made extensive watercolors, prints to be sampled into the animation, developed the animation style and all movements connected to the characters

The third video in the series âMenuju Palung Terdalamâ was inspired by psychedelic trips and long-winded hallucinations that seem like it would never end. Abdul is swallowed by the sea monster and somehow ends up in a field of mutated poppies where he experiences the opium hum. What happens after is a dreamlike montage of him losing grip of reality and finding his freedom only after he literally consumes himself.

Combining aspects of mythology and surrealism, we concocted a story of three friends made up of three majority cultures in Indonesia who go through the journey of a lifetime to lead to their ultimate salvation.

The first video is âArea Lepas Pantaiâ, the starting point of these charactersâ adventure. Taking inspiration from ancient bestiaries, we added the folk beast âBlemmyesâ from Zoroastrian belief into the storyline. Classic cannibals, Agus must find his way out of their habitat and into safe space which coincidentally is a mysterious hotel only a few miles away.
