Documentation from the opening of Materials and Processes for an Expanding World, a Soft Systems group exhibition presented Dec. 11–13, 2025, in collaboration with Plot in Los Angeles. Works on paper, sculpture, ephemera, and video, submitted through the mail. Exhibition Statement: Tectonic plates shift beneath the ocean, signals shoot across seas, ideas leap from head to head, era to era. Everything that blooms eventually deflates; heat cools down, stars faint, waves roll back to the sea.   Art’s the same. Sometimes it cracks, sometimes it’s quiet. Ideas appear, then disappear. Concepts grow, then peel away. Meaning changes shape but still leaves a trace behind.   Materials and Processes for an Expanding World reflects the ways artists create their own universes through movement, experiment, and intentional accidents. What’s inside the exhibition? Performances, unfinished works, temporary objects, sketches, doodles, notes, observations, and everyday things that might seem unimportant yet hold small universes within them. Featuring contributions from: Leah Sandler, Jiayun Chen, Mae Bishop, Yusuf Shamma, Bz Zhang, Ika Pearl, Drew Villanueva, Beck Corrigan, Daniel Milanese, Luciana Varkulja, Hypothetical Star, Margaret Oakley, Y. Waffle, Vivien Adamian, G. Laster, Alkaid Ramirez, Brigid O’Neil, Noelle Whitaker, Zoey Solomon, Vanessa Norton, Anabelle Lee Dehm, Wonderful Cringe, Parham Ghalamdar, TAITAIxTina, Araceli Zuniga, Austin Reilly, Madeleine Soich, Jules Garder, Yi Cynthia Chen, Lara DiBlasio, Zhizi Wu, D. Soft Systems presents “Paths for the Study of Contingent Dimensions” Soft Systems in collaboration with Flatline Gallery present Paths for the Study of Contingent Dimensions, a group exhibition of five artists exploring the diagram as narrative. Here, the diagram operates as a vector for world-building, constructing a new type of reality according to the patterns and structures through which the artist thinks, plotting rationality in spatial terms. Featuring work by Vivien Adamian, J. Grace Giordano, Ian James, Tong Pan, and Deb Sokolow. The exhibition will be on view April 17 through May 8, 2026, at Flatline Gallery in Bucktown, Chicago. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 9pm. Following the reception, the gallery will be open for regular viewing hours Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 6pm. @__________flatline @ehdelaveli @debsokolow @tong_pan_ @grace_gior @spa_shorts Graphic by @b0tnet.exe

Soft Systems presents "Assigned Meaning, Trained Response," a visual art and sound program featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and performance. On the conditioning and domestication of the art object: What follows is a consideration of the art object and the new layer of meaning it is given when presented in a gallery or museum. How curation, the viewer, and the space itself operate as sites of projection that condition responses to the work. Things are forced to behave in the world, conditioned by expectations and trained responses to signifiers of meaning. Assigned and forced meanings accumulate over time, a kind of forced evolution. In this way, art is domesticated by galleries and museums, its meaning and production shaped by outside forces, and the creative process becomes no longer free. The program will feature visual art contributions from Paulette S. Hartman, Gabriel Torres Oaxaca, Ika Pearl, Ralston Finney, Max Raymond, Kristen Huizar, Lane Sheehy, and Miles Winfree. There will be a musical setting performed by Repeater Ensemble. The exhibition will be presented at an apartment gallery in Echo Park, Los Angeles, on view March 29 through 31.
