He was born in Guangzhou, China, and migrated to the Bay Area, California. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. Tong’s paintings and sculptures are playful meditations on fabrics of reality that allure the mysticisms of the ordinary. He stages these happenings by distorting forms and perspectives, toying with perception and expectation of things seen and recognized – landscapes, observations, and sheer imagination – manifesting in the form of an unlikely lost-and-found item, scenes on the road, or a change in the air. Ideas are sketched, written, interpreted, and these speculations form the images. His curatorial, design, and music practices, as forms of intermedia, are direct actions, as a thoughtful-delinquent, catered in response to the world that he knows through the lens of Marx’s dialectical materialism. He views these mediums as avenues to penetrate and debunk such a system with their corresponding forces, in conflict and unity.

They have a BFA in Art and Design from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Painting from Boston University.  Grace works across painting, drawing, installation, writing, and sculpture, exploring meaning making and language through systematic play. The work often takes the form of diagrams and constructed environments that pull directly from the organizational and relational nature of language. Mapping thinking and writing through material systems, Grace considers how the invisible structure of language is foundational to the way we interpret and experience the world.

Soft Systems in collaboration with Flatline Gallery present "Paths for the Study of Contingent Dimensions," a group exhibition of five artists exploring the diagram as narrative. Here, the diagram operates as a vector for world-building, constructing a new type of reality according to the patterns and structures through which the artist thinks, plotting rationality in spatial terms. Featuring work by Vivien Adamian, J. Grace Giordano, Ian James, Tong Pan, and Deb Sokolow. The exhibition will be on view April 17 through May 8, 2026, at Flatline Gallery in Bucktown, Chicago. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 9pm. Following the reception, the gallery will be open for regular viewing hours Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 6pm, or by appointment
