Maya Keren

Slow Burn is officially out in the world!!! According to my mom, in the Chinese zodiac, every 12 years of your life is either really good or really bad. I try to think of it as… full of growth one way or another. I wrote the bulk of this album right after turning 24, this infamous year. I was moving through a period of grief, and then was hit by the apartment fire some of you may know really affected me and my friend Claire. I feel that I came of age (whatever that means) in a real way that year, and this album became a friend, a source of solace, and a way of working shit out during that time. As it goes, I also feel like somehow things clicked in as a songwriter and a producer in a way they hadn’t before. These songs feel like the truest representation so far of what I love and what I find beautiful. I hope that the songs land true, and that they can provide a measure of feeling known, of cracking open the heart, of whomever may listen. I am grateful to so many loved ones, friends, and collaborators, without whom this album could not have seen the light of day. Thank you to Claire and Cami, my album co-parents. (Shoutout to @_otracami_ who released her album Runoff today!) Thank you to Eden, Isa, Lesley, Maya, Jeff, Akiva, and Vic for being early listeners and shaping the album in ways big and small. Hi everyone and hope you’re staying warm My next single Ricochet, off of my upcoming album Slow Burn, is now out. I wrote this song last winter during a period of feeling very lonely and without answers. To accompany this release I am also officially selling MERCH that I have been dutifully crafting alone in my room for the last many months. I sewed 8 travel altars, cotton with silk lining and finger knit mohair wrapping cords. 3 of them include copper “hand” incense holders I made. All of them include a small stick of Kungyokudo sandalwood incense, a chestnut from Greenwood Cemetery I foraged in November, and 1 mini BIC lighter. While on tour and traveling I often bring a collection of small spiritually meaningful mementos with me wrapped in a cloth but I always wish I had a way to keep them a little more secure. Which inspired this design- these altars have 4 pockets sewn into them and can lie flat, hang on a wall, or roll up tight. More info on bandcamp link in my bio! Slow Burn, my next solo album, comes out March 20 (my mom’s birthday, the first day of spring, and debatably the first day of Aries season.) This album has been a labor of love for the last two years, carrying me through an immense amount of change and growth. I wrote the first songs in Claire’s apartment that we lost to the fire, a couple in friend’s apartments that I stayed in post-fire and at my parent’s house in Wyndmoor, and the rest in the home where live now, in PLG. Out now! Careful In The Sun traverses a verdant landscape of improvisation grounded in loops and songs by Maya Keren.
