A benevolent horror…
I secretly always wanted to be a Kuker. Kukeri are masked ritual figures from Bulgarian folklore who perform noisy, wild dances to chase away evil spirits and bring health, fertility, and abundance for the coming year.
The ritual is usually passed down through generations and tied to the countryside. As a city kid I never really had access to it so I gave myself permission to do it when the moment felt right. Since I had no pass downs I rolled up the old sleeves and made myself a costume. Thank you @sararatcliffe and @__sugar__ray__ for all the help! And thank you @maxxibop for always pushing the people around you to be creative and silly and free( and for the fab photos).
In a world full of evil spirits both inside us and all around us it felt necessary. And with everything going on I wanted to point the ritual back toward Bulgaria too where a quiet revolution is pushing back against corruption and the mafia. It felt like the right time to start clearing out some bad energy.
Walking the Northdown road in Margate as a kuker felt good!
