Lowkey most special holiday of the year. Every single day is 1000 mph and there’s only one person who knows how to slow things down. Special Happy Mother’s Day to Rachel, my Queen, our cornerstone and the heart and soul of our everyday. And to our mommy’s and sisters, to the moon and back all day, everyday.

Phila Lorn from Mawn says the Shake Shack on 20th and Sansom needs to make the cut for our dining guide this year. What is the lore? Is there an off-menu item that slaps? Give us the tea. 🍵🫖 Also… aren’t you just obsessed with Rachel’s laugh?! 🥰 📹 by Gabe Coffey / Staff 🧰 ✂️ by Ariane Datil / Staff

HOW TO LUNCH AT MAWN: 1. 11-2:30 (last seating 2:15) on Thurs/Fri/Sat 2. Line starts somewhere around 10:30am 3. Restaurant seats 28 at a time 4. People should spend around 1 hour-ish with us 5. FIND THE LIST LADY OR LAD 6. Put your name down 7. You’ll be called next 8. No phone numbers, place holds, only seating full parties 10. Be kind to people around you and think about the people behind you (you were once there too) 11. Order enough to make it all make sense 12. If you get frustrated and start resenting the system…remember, we’re just talking about lunch.

Mawn is 3 years old. Still together. Still Mom&Pop. Still on 9th street, South Philly. Still sold out within the first minute. Still the infamous line out the door for lunch. Still doing everything we do with a smile and a how-ya doin attitude. Still a noodle shop with no rules. Whether we see you now or later, we’ll still be here. So holla at us man. -Mawnagement

Philly and beyond, Obviously, we ain’t wit ICE and any administration’s approach to immigration when it doesn’t make any fuckin sense. The shit that is taking place in Minneapolis and this country as a whole is a shame on us moment. Please know, we support collective action and believe in resistance. Using our voices to stand up for what is right is something people died for already. We support anyone participating in today’s shutdown however, we will remain open at both Mawn and Sao for normal business hours and do things our way. Our employees depend on coming to work to support their families as well as honoring their craft. We, as a small business, harbor this transaction and provide a safe and dependable space for it to happen. That said, we will support this collective resistance by donating 10% of sales from both restaurants (as well as personally matching that number) to @vamos_juntos_ . We all should pray for a better world. Stay up - Saovages & Mawnagement

Thank you @phillymag , @kaelanisays , @adamerace and Jason for including us on this list and #3 is amazing (Iverson). It’s almost been 3 years now and our operation is still made strong by an incredible group of people who work so hard every shift and are examples of what is still good and real in this industry. Lastly, there are people behind the scenes that are directly responsible for any of this to even exist. People who don’t know about these lists and honestly don’t care. They only care about getting to the restaurants and back home to their family’s in one piece. It breaks our heart to know that their everyday routine now has an element of realistic fear that everything could change in an instant. Fuck ICE and anyone who thinks anything about this is ok. Please notify each other if you see these rats in our communities…could mean a better day for somebody you love. 📸 @ihatealexlau

“Famously, I woke up at three o’clock [in the morning] and I said, “We gotta open up a restaurant, dude.” And she was like, “Go to sleep.” ”He’s the dreamer and I’m the realist. And you need the two.” Read the full interview with Rachel and Phila @mawnphilly in the new issue of Fare: Philadelphia, available now for preorder at the link in our bio. Photography by @samaharris

Yesterday at the @phillyinqfood food fest I got a tap on my shoulder, I turned around and it was my old ESL teacher from Francis Scott Key on 8th and Wolf. I went there from Kindergarten to 5th. Ms. De Soto, along with all of the teachers at that school were directly responsible for helping hundreds of kids from immigrant parents learn English. I was one of them. It was a rough block from afar but if you were from there..you’d understand the love we had for each other. The patience and dedication from these teachers helped us get out of where they put us. Stand up of immigrants..we all have to start somewhere. You never know if that little brown kid could grow up and win a James Beard. Much love and much respect to all teachers. Yesterday, I was star struck.
