Ahead of its 275th anniversary and Philly’s biggest summer ever, Pennsylvania Hospital, recognized as the nation’s oldest, opened a public museum – and it is the coolest place to visit in Philly right now.
Inside the Pine Building — the site of the original hospital that Benjamin Franklin and physician Thomas Bond co-founded in 1751 — you can check out eight galleries showcasing the extraordinary evolution of maternity care, behavioral health, outbreaks and epidemics, and medicine as we know it today.
You can even step inside — and feel like you’ve stepped back in time — both the medical library, which is home to more than 13,000 original books, and the surgical amphitheater, where surgeries were performed before an audience, without anesthesia.

In 2011, John Matthews’ mother, Kathleen, was diagnosed with lung cancer. She only lived nine months, but Matthews made a promise that he would keep fighting the disease that killed her.
That promise led him to bike across the country and launch the nonprofit Ride Hard, Breathe Easy @ride4lungs to raise awareness for the challenges lung cancer patients and their families face.
Matthews was one of the finalists in the 2025 Be Well Philly Health Hero Challenge, presented by Independence Blue Cross. Each year, the public nominates the Health Heroes who inspire them the most and vote to select a winner who receives a $15,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

He asked the moms of Marc Vetri, Alex Holley, Brad Ingelsby, Nikil Saval, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Jesús Luzardo to share their favorite memories, best parenting advice, and little details about their children before the fame, accolades, and cheering crowds.

Enter Lindsey Scannapieco, the developer behind South Philly’s Bok Building, who has made a name for herself by turning unexpected spaces into thriving, affordable hubs for artists, makers, and small businesses.
