A slice of sweet hooliganism! 🥥🗡️🍧🫟Today we had a chilled time connecting with workshop participants at Magenta House as we celebrated the creativity and legacy of one of the Philippines’ most beloved desserts, the Halo Halo. For this snack-building and watercolour painting class, students learned the anatomy of a halo halo: how to assemble and combine, then paint and shade, and of course consume, this summertime treat. FEASTER DINNER at @magentahouse.redfern last night! 🐣🍽️🍗🥬🌾🍛This dinner arose from a WhatsApp group chat about cross-cultural recipes, testing ingredients and well-being tips bc why not! Family holidays like Easter and Xmas can be an isolating time for those living away from the homelands, so making and sharing nostalgic meals together with chosen-family is the diasporic hug we needed 🥹🗾 On the menu: Kuku Sabzi, Ketupat, Kalio Brisket rendang, Chicken coconut adobo, Pepes tahu, Turmeric marinated tempe, Turon & Coco jam w ice cream, Mixed-mushroom adobo, Butterfly Pea & Lemongrass Rice, Ginger scallion egg noodles, Garlic Prawns, Asian Vegetables + an assortment of snacks and drinks! Foods by @mamalomo @margeyyyyyy @marzigold w task bunny assistance from @jareth_duke @masonkimber and Mark 😘 Plus, Turon Hot-Cross Buns from @taguan.cafe and Classic Hot-Cross Buns from @blackstarpastry for dat Easter touch! The feast was followed by Shakti mat sessions to aid digestion and homestyle foot baths @marzigold prepared for guests to improve blood flow and muscle aches (comprising barley, magnesium salt, makrut, bay leaves, peppermint and coconut oils, ginger & butterfly pea). Foot spa simulation was elevated by a turbooo fish toy @margeyyyyyy randomly bought from Aldi (see last slide) I think we need to buy 4 more! 🐠🎣🤖🤖🤖 Magenta Day Spa next, yes? 🧖🏾‍♀️👽 Happy Easter to those who celebrate /observe! 🐣

POV when you bundle nasi lemak, soak napkins in stunning indigo, and build a memory-house for flavoured chips! 🍙🌀🥔We recently welcomed emerging artists and curators from ACT & NSW for 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙆𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙣~a gathering day to digest our practices through knowledge-sharing, storytelling, and eating imaginaries at @magentahouse.redfern 🧠🥄 @hilum.earth @marzigold & @megafaunafood led tactile workshops and dialogues that explored how edible archiving, ethnobotany, food sovereignty and takeaway design have the power to shape our eating psychologies + lived experiences. 🌾🍚 ‘Rice is Life’ with @megafaunafood was a food demo and nasi-lemak-wrapping lesson that explored the role of rice in shaping culture + identities across various cultures. 🦋🫘For ‘Reclaiming Blue: Indigo, Napkin Cloths, and Collective Repair’ @hilum.earth taught us how to dye salvaged dining napkins while she discussed how iron, indigo, cotton, sugar, and tobacco were connected through colonial trade routes, shaping global food systems, labour, and land. We went demon snack mode with ‘CRUNCH TIME: the potato crisp as flavour fugitive, social experiment, and appetite marker.’ 😈Armed with mystery flavoured-chips and tasting placemats, @marzigold led a storytelling-guessing-game that unwrapped snacks marketing, design packaging, and food social hierarchies. Afterwards, the group foraged through art & food publications in our Reading Room and received snacks and prompts to explore their own relationship with takeaway food practices. Oh u caught me at a very Singapinoy time in my lyf 路发🐎🦁🧧🍊 Softly ambling into the Year of the Fire Horse (and new moon cycle) with a prosperity aura that will hopefully attract more creative odysseys, homeland returns, succulent friendships, and metabolic work processes that encourage many industries (not just the arts sector) to 𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 , not burn out. 🌝 FWIW, here’s the you-do-you offering I made yesterday with Singapura, Filipino and Australian currencies to signify my tricultural upbringing and the spirit-objects that represent an energetic life shared with others. Shine bright like an ice crystal y’all!! 💎🍧For me, ice cream is more than just a dessert of frosty, bulb-shaped wonder. Making this snack scoops me back to family outings at the local Magnolia Ice Cream parlour in our hometown of Cubao, #QuezonCity (see last slide) 👩🏽‍🍳🥄 I’d usually get my sugary fix of banana splits and chunky Rocky Road. Then, alongside my cousins, I’d stare through the factory window as hair-masked food workers mixed and batched ice cream pots assembly-style. The alchemy of flavours, textures, and edible polychromatic pizzazz! I would be like, ‘I wanna be an ice cream maker when I grow up!’ Instead, I became…an arts worker lol 🙂‍↔️ Anyhoo, I realise now that I did find a way to squeeze this into my practice: I make ice cream/sorbets for art gigs, gathering projects and friends/neighbs as a form of nostalgia + love language. Plus I like the idea of feeding people something so magical that it changes the temperature of their tongues! As for the ice cream plant? It closed in 1999 and the site eventually became Robinsons Magnolia mall 🛍️ But i’m keeping its magnolious spirit alive with ice cream tomfoolery across the years! Some flavours I kick with: ube halaya with cookies & cream ~ charcoaled black sesame & leatherwood honey ~ three-type mango with calamansi ~ ube with matcha pearls & heritage salts ~ turmeric & candied ginger ~ oh and making fake ice cream studies for our @magentahouse.redfern Halo Halo watercolour workshop using instant-potato mix and food colouring (slide 2 and 11) 😝🥔 Open to any flavour combo suggestions for 2026!
