Meant to post this yesterday on the day itself, but anyway, happy birthday Shakespeare and happy VANYA-versary to me! A year ago yesterday, I had my first public understudy performance of VANYA. The theater was full of so many friends and family, all of whom had taken the time in the middle of the work week to go to a random Wednesday matinee and watch me do this kind of crazy thing. It happened two days before I turned thirty and, to quote a friend, the celebration after felt bigger than a birthday, a wedding, and a graduation combined. From my audition process to the nine day gauntlet of learning the show to my weekly rehearsals with Emilio and our SM team to watching the sublime magician-performer-puppet-master Andrew delight and enchant audiences every night at the Lucille Lortel, I watched springtime in the West Village unfurl its particular strange beauty and felt so sublimely lucky to be doing this with my life, even if only for a little while. The entire team, from producers to designers and the original creative team to the front of house staff to passers by on the street, could not have been more encouraging and supportive. I’m so grateful to every single person who made it possible for me be up there, hundreds of hours of work (my own and that of so many others) condensed into four hours across two public performances. I miss these people and these characters daily. Our lives are beautiful and dignified, tiny and gentle, sweet as touch. I believe that so much. Ok, photos: 1. The After (📸 @heatherenglander ) 2. an oak tree grows in a sheltered cove a golden chain wound around it a golden chain wound around it and on that chain walks a learned cat… (Masha Prozorov, Three Sisters, Act 1) Edwardian walking skirt and blouse sewn by me. Took a beating in the rain, the hem facing is wrecked, the back closures a disaster, but overall…very very pleased. A new time period for me and one I’m excited to continue to explore. Thanks as ever to the @nyhistoricalcostumers for arranging the All Hallow’s Eve meet up and for all the encouragement and affirmation. This not-so-little amateur seamstress appreciates it so very much.

🥀aesthetique🕯️ Thanks for the love for my 1840s ensemble! It means a lot for me to be able to share it with you. Swipe for a mini-dive into the different layers of the look. In almost every instance, I aimed for “historical adequacy,” exploring accurate methods and techniques where appropriate and cutting corners where energy and economy required it: -closest to the skin, a hand-sewn linen shift. This style is more appropriate for 1750s-1790s than 1840s, and the neckline and hem is totally unfinished (oops). Wore it anyway because linen is a fantastic natural fiber to wear close to the skin, it wasn’t going to mess with the silhouette of the gown, and I really couldn’t be bothered to make another shift when this one was so close to done. This layer also includes long Regency stays from @redthreaded (I’ve seen a lot of historical costumers cheat 1840s with their Regency stays because of the long, angular lines it gives you) and cotton stockings from Burnley and Trowbridge. And ribbon garters. - next layer is a bum roll (not pictured) and a corded petticoat. The many lines of cotton cording took hours for me to lay down (by machine), but it was so worth it for the shape and support it gives the outer skirts. Dancing slippers from the totally accurate J Crew 50% off sale. -example of corded petticoat and sleeve supports from the 1830s (Met Museum) -another petticoat, this time a mess of an 18th century linen petticoat I made for a picnic this summer. Gave me extra floof that I liked and most folks would have worn 3+ petticoats so I figured, why not? -last petticoat, made from a repurposed plain cotton kingsize bedsheet. -finally, the dress, fastened in the back with hooks and eyes. -accessories really complete the look for me. In this case, flower crown from @zuzuspetalsbrooklyn , repurposed red ribbon necklace, and a thrifted cameo brooch. -add some black velvet gloves you’re ready for your victorian postmortem photograph at a grungy LES absinthe bar ⚰️

Hopping back on here to thank to @kingmanormuseum for hosting an enchanting Victorian holiday ball! 1840s dress made by yours truly. Getting to finally wear an ensemble I spent upwards of 80 hours researching and making at home over the past weeks and months was an absolute dream, made even more wonderful by our historical hosts and my very dear friends. May share some dress-making process photos anon. For now, a very special thank you to @zuzuspetalsbrooklyn for making the Christmas-y flower crown of my ✨dreams✨ they could not have been more lovely and accommodating and kind to work with on this project. And cheers to the many historical costumers and researchers out there making the ~ s t u f f ~ 📸 @garckev94

Toni Morrison, “Racism and Fascism,” The Nation, May 29, 1995 (in the collection “The Source of Self Regard). Instagram algorithm will bury this but fuck it. Go to whenweallvote.org to check on your voter registration status, early voting and absentee ballot deadlines (@whenweallvote ). Call your Senator or honestly any fucking Senator to demand that the Supreme Court vacancy not be filled until after the election, no matter what M*tch McC*nn*ll says. While you’re there, demand Congressional support for the Green New Deal Resolution, and throw in the Confederate Statue Removal Act for good measure. Donate to #louisvillecommunitybailfund to support protestors demonstrating against the INJUSTICE served to #breonnataylor. Buy stamps and write letters to #SaveTheUSPS. And while that’s all happening, enlist the storytellers and crafters of narrative to ENVISION a FUTURE beyond our children’s children’s children. Morrison, “The Future of Time” (1996): “Some writers disagree with prevailing notions of futurelessness....they very much indeed not only have but insist on a future....I believe I am detecting an informed vision based on harrowing experience that nevertheless gestures towards a redemptive future. And I notice the milieu from which this vision rises. It is race inflected, gendered, colonialized, displaced, hunted....That not only is history not dead, but that it is about to take its first unfettered breath. Not soon, perhaps not in thirty years or fifty, because such a breath, such a massive intake, will take time. But it will be there....Time does have a future. Longer than its past and definitely more hospitable—to the human race.”
