🖤 Summer Solstice sooncome, and we are celebrating the season of light with our second BPOC / Global Majority Folk Club. Come along to the lovely @thepeerhat Manchester on June 20th for some singing, session tunes, storytelling, hanging out, and more singing. Expect plenty of traditonal songs of Albion, plus diasporic songs from all around the world. Bring your heritage and sing out. 🖤 We are so pumped to have the incredible Anglo Concertina maestro, fine singer and expert on English traditional music @cohenbraithwaite as our special guest. Cohen will play a solo set around the middle part of the session, and will also join in some of the singing and session tunes. Follow us on Substack for an early heads-up about some of the songs. 🖤 Instrument Library: Allies and friends, if you have unused or spare folk instruments you’d like to donate for us to redistribute within the community, please DM us to arrange. We will provide an “instrument library” at each Folk Club, so that anyone coming along for the first time can have a go. Folk is for everyone. 🖤 Check out Cohen’s current album on BandCamp, Play Up The Music. It’s a phenomenal piece of work where he explores Caribbean and Black American variants of English folk songs. 🖤 Summer Solstice BPOC / Global Majority Folk Club, 20 June, 6-9pm, @the_peer_hat Manchester. Free entry. 🖤 Accessibility: the Folk Club will take place downstairs in The Peer Hat.

We love our beautiful logo designed by the prolific @jacobvjoyce Huge thanks to Jacob for creating something so stunning! Here are some words about the logo from jacob: “The Logo design takes inspiration from the seedpod of the silk cotton tree, a tree which in Caribbean folklore is a portal between worlds and home to many spirits. Within the frame of the bursting seedpod sits a banjo, with a bridge made of the Sankofa and Dono Ntoaso Adinkra symbols. Embodying the work and vision of Black British Folk Collective, the Sankofa represents reaching back and retrieving something from the past, while the Dono Ntoaso represents camaraderie, rhythm and rejoicing with community.” @jacobvjoyce has a big exhibition opening at @queercircle this Saturday 11th April, the show is on for 3 months so plenty of time to check out their work. Big thanks to @anarcha.folk.fest for their crustie micro-grant, this made it possible for us to commission Jacob. 🖤

🗣️🪕🎻 Huge thanks to all the wonderful folkies who came to our first BPOC Folk Club for Spring Equinox. The @piehouse.coop was buzzing with Black, Brown and Global Majority lovers of folk and tradition, playing music and singing songs from these islands and from the diaspora. There was so much love in the room. We believe that folk is a healing force and a powerful maker of deep connections. Last night’s BPOC Folk Club showed us all of these beliefs in joyous action. We sensed that if we’d been yearning for a space like this then others would be, too. Again this proved powerfully true. Folkies of colour sharing session tunes, songs, swapping instruments and trying new folk instruments they’d never played before - it was all just beautiful. The sense of community and of growing possibilities was palpable. After a final chorus of The Parting Glass, everyone left on a dreamy high. Thank you @piehouse.coop for hosting us, and @ffern.co Folk Foundation for making this possible. Thanks and kudos to the allies who donated beautiful unwanted instruments for redistribution within the community (an autoharp from Steve, a mandolin and violin from Lucy). ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻 The next BPOC Folk Club from the Black British Folk Collective is for Summer Solstice. Join us in Manchester on 20 June at @thepeerhat - further details to follow. Subscribe to our Substack to make sure you never miss anything. Link in bio. For our BPOC/Global Majority folkies we heard the desire for more so we have created a whatsapp community for us to organise and co-produce more sessions! Join us at the link in bio for more clubs! In love, joy, song and solidarity. 🖤

It’s springtime again 🌸 The wheel of the year turns ever on - last weekend on @bbc6music ’s Dream Time @zzzakia celebrated the Spring Equinox, welcoming in the light with lots of folky selections, hopeful new releases and an all-time favourite ode to this time of year from Sun Ra, as well as hearing from very special guests @blackbritishfolk A trio of musicians and researchers made up of @angelcakepie2 , @island_____girl and @marcarcass , we hear about the collective’s work, dreams and plans, as well as some of their equinox rituals and a few of the songs that are important to them. The first BPOC Folk Club: Spring Equinox Session arrives as an evening of song, story and shared tradition. A space to come together, to listen, to play, and to recognise ourselves in one another. Please come along and bring your voices to raise together in song. Bring an instrument if you have one. No worries if you don’t—through the generosity of our allies, we will also have donated instruments available on the night, as part of an ongoing act of redistribution. If you have a spare instrument you’d like to pass on, we would love to hear from you. Join us 26 March, 6–9pm at @piehouse.coop , SE London. With thanks to @ffern.co Huge thanks to @mike_hankin for our beautiful Green Man. Save the date. More soon.

🪕🪕 Allies and community!! 🪕🪕 Do you have a spare Banjo knocking around you never play? In the spirit of redistribution and reparations we are asking you to donate to us spare Banjos or any other folk instruments you have lying around such as fiddles, whistles, accordions, concertinas, percussive instruments like drums and bones! We are very inspired by our friends across the pond @black.banjo.reclamation 🖤🖤🖤 We will be using these instruments at our upcoming BPOC/global majority folk clubs and we plan to find the instruments new homes with black folkies! This is a great way for our allies to show solidarity and support our movement! ✊🏻✊🏽✊🏾 ✊🏿 Our first folk club is on 26th March 6-9pm at @piehouse.coop Please DM us if you have something to donate and we can organise drop offs.

Another very late Whole 25 post! @whole.festival was an insane, chaotic, sexy, overstimulating, beautiful queer occasion! I’ve never been around that many queers before (I met one straight man the whole time!) and it was a beautiful mess! I really hope to be back in 2026, I would love to so let’s see! Who’s coming!? Big love to the beautiful London and beyond crew and thank you so much to @trina.worldwide for giving me the opportunity to curate some of the programme for @blackobsidian_soundsystem Sorry if I didn’t tag you, there’s a lot of you!
