Shot these forever ago, finally stumbled onto them. Two spots for Interstate Batteries, with alternate gags. I did these goofy little things because the second one stars NASCAR driver Christopher Bell, and I’m secretly a big racing fan, so I just bugged him with questions all day. He told me that he has never peed his pants during a long car race, but that he has gotten really close, although a lot of other drivers do it. And he says they don’t wear diapers because their jumpsuits are too tight. I tried it on; it is. I don’t usually post BTS, but this was just one of the most fun and ridiculous-looking shoots ever, for @girlskateboards This really brought me back to something I have been desperately missing over the last few years, which is just the sheer joy of making things. LEAVE YOUR MARK ft. @daewon1song (Full quality and frame size in 4k up on Vimeo now.) To back up Daewon’s message — that skaters use everything they have at their disposal to create — I wanted to bring his skating through all different visual styles, never repeating the same animation technique or specific medium twice. And I wanted only to use styles that felt as handmade and tangible as skating itself. (Never any AI here, folks.) Which included: Charcoal and colored pencil; collage; highlighters; sand (yes, sand); classic cel animation; wheatpasting frames on a wall; turntable phenakistoscope; stop-motion animation; tabletop claymation; sketchbook pen and ink; pencil; watercolor; felt; and even spraypainting live on the ramp itself. @meta presents: LEAVE YOUR MARK ft. @daewon1song (For better quality than here: full-Q 4k film up on my Vimeo & my site now.) This is a very special one. I had the chance to make an art film for Meta to be screened at an event in Cannes, about the inherent artistic nature of skateboarding. Instead of making a doc/narrative-based piece, in which we were supposed to meet various skate artists working in different media — I decided to just SHOW skaters’ art, OF skating. And from there, I could think of one skater whose skating truly and solely is his art form: Daewon Song. So the idea was simple: create a continuous, flowing, endless line of Daewon skating his favorite canvas—a mini ramp—and then curate a group of skater artists from all different visual media, to interpret his line in their own style. So that Daewon’s line flows from one visual universe to the next. But not only the artists were skaters; almost all of the film crew and post production members skated too! I’ll be updating this file next week with an extended-credits version, which features all the film crew as well (right now, as this was suddenly and unexpectedly released today, I happen to be out of the country without any files!).
