Thrilled to have been DOP on the stop motion sandworm sequences for Tim Burton's @beetlejuicemovie released this weekend. Kudos to a fantastic crew @mackandsaund who are a world class, super talented team of designers, sculptors, armature makers, set and prop makers and much more and all of this happens before we ever get to shine a light at anything. Revisiting THE HOUSE part 3 Mabel & Isobel The children’s parents have fallen under Van Schoonbeck’s malign spell and thus become neglectful of their needs. Left on their own, they decide to explore the puzzling house, its architecture without logic, with walls and windows never appearing in the same place twice and its staircases, which go missing without warning. Baby Isobel leads her sister to the basement, where they find comfort in the familiarity of their old possessions stored there. The numerous locations of the new house led the lighting to be more varied and complex than that of the old cottage. The first set we lit and tested was the grand drawing room. The large windows were key lit from tungsten sources bounced off mirrors, maximising the small footprint of our studio. Other sources were a chandelier full of practical LEDs and a fireplace where we developed what became a quite complex in-camera stop motion fire effect. Later in the shoot came the elegant dining lit only from sources of candle light (painted nano LEDs) supplemented by other stronger LEDs and by the new and hypnotic gas lights on the walls, which were cooler and greener than the flames of the oil lamp. For the basement, I keyed using an eerie and coolish softbox source and gobo to create some shape. I justified that there was a top light from an overhead grate or something similar out of shot. For the oil lamp, which Mabel carried, we shot several different longer exposures. When combined by VFX we could get the actual grain of wheat bulb to expose and spread into the area of the set around it whilst holding warm detail in the lamp itself, which normally would have been over exposed. Experimentation and testing enabled the desired effect! Revisiting THE HOUSE Part 2 Moody lighting in miniature! After Raymond’s moonlit meeting in the woods with a mysterious character, he returns home consumed by a newfound and disturbing energy. His babblings and odd behaviour are prescient of his family’s uncertain future and the shift towards the curious and menacing instability contained within the walls of the new House. The next morning will bring an unexpected messenger. The lighting of the cottage needed to shape the naturalistic interiors and convey a heavy mood and contrast consistent with the tone of the story. I went as dark as I could, whilst holding a hint of detail in the shadows. The night shots were motivated by the practical oil lamp which contained a single grain of wheat bulb; after testing this proved much closer to a lamp flame than our Led’s. All practicals were DMX programmed in @dragonframe.software with fire flicker patterns, then supplemented by tungsten sources, typically dimmed DLH4 dedos warmed further by gels. Tiny pieces of shiny board were used to reflect fill lights to balance the scene. ------------- Directed by @marcandemma Animators @annasp87 Kecy Salangad Aleksey Butorin @timallenanimation @tinekluth @hwrighty Produced by @nexusstories for Netflix Shot @mackandsaund link in bio ⬆️ for full credits #stopmotion #netflix #thehouse #animatedfeature #cinematography #madebyhand #making of #framebyframe

5 years ago, I was shooting The House (story 1) for Netflix. A lot of time and planning went into the cinematography, designed to underscore the different environments of the story and be reasonably accurate to its late 19th century setting. It was separated into several distinct looks that develop over the course of the film, becoming increasingly more dramatic towards its conclusion. The claustrophobic cottage, in the first part of the film, had sources of daylight, muted firelight and one or two small oil lamps. This kept the lighting purposefully simple and natural looking, in contrast to what was to come in the large scale, luxury mansion, which required a great deal more complex programming of numerous practical lights. All is peaceful until Raymond’s disapproving relatives arrive... More clips to come later this week. #stopmotion #netflix #thehouse #animatedfeature #cinematography #madebyhand #making of #framebyframe crew details at /features/the-house Link in bio ⬆️

DIOR | A Ride to the Moon A film to celebrate the Lunar New Year! Lovely to shoot another one with @ninagantz and @ummmrenee for @jonathan.anderson @dior . Greatly inspired by early cinema's animated shorts mixed with mechanical, theatrical effects, all set in a wonderful Rococo-style proscenium. The film was animated by hand and brought to life completely in camera. Thanks to all crew, particularly: 1st AC @tonash1 Gaffer @pearcecrowley spark Paulo Fernandes ---------- @blink_ink Voiced by @070shake Music Composition @terencedunn Animation @andyrbiddle and Steve Warne Awesome set @mattesandminiatures_ltd Full credits /commercials/dior-a-ride-to-the-moon #stopmotion #dior #johnathananderson

Catherine O’Hara voiced three characters for Frankenweenie (2012), including the brilliant Weird Girl. Frankenweenie Wiki - She delivers ominous pronouncements in a monotone voice with an unnerving stare. Her constant companion is her fluffy white cat Mr. Whiskers, whose unblinking gaze matches her own. The other kids give them a wide berth—especially when Weird Girl rambles about Mr. Whiskers’ dreams, and she attempts to pass off his "premonitions" to their own hands. She may very well be psychic. #catherineohara #frankenweenie #stopmotion #timburton

1. Final lighting for The Noodle Bar set I lit for Isle of Dogs. I saw this set displayed at the Wes Anderson exhibition @designmuseum yesterday. Just a thought, but isn't it a bit of a missed opportunity not to invite people who shot the film to light some of the sets as they were seen in the final film, rather than generic flat light? 💡 2.
