A Night of Music and Dance in Support of the Lit & Luz Festival

This summer, we’ll come together for two special events supporting MAKE Literary Productions and the Lit & Luz Festival: first on June 23 for our Board’s annual fundraiser, “Cocktails & Collaborators”, and again on August 8 at the Empty Bottle for “Luz at the Edge”.
At a time when immigrant voices and multicultural expression are increasingly under threat, MAKE Lit continues to create vital space for connection, creativity, and cultural exchange — celebrating Latinx culture through multilingual storytelling and cross-border artistic collaboration.
Join us on August 8 for an evening of music, dance, and community in support of the artists, writers, and performers building bridges between Chicago and Mexico.
Full lineup will be announced on June 10!

The 2026-27 Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art, our signature cross-cultural celebration of Language, Literature, and Art, will return to Chicago, November 8- Nov 13, 2026, bringing together artists, performers, musicians, poets, and writers from Chicago and Mexico around the theme of “Edges/Bordes” ✨
Participating artists in the festival’s 13th edition will explore social, geographical, and linguistic limits through tensions at the “edge of space”. The weeklong festival programming will consider the complexities of official borders, as well as the ways in which soft and hard edges are constructed within cities and regions—and within artistic practices themselves—through language, culture, identity, and policy.

Last week, I presented the second iteration of a performance, "What broken bones will we mend together now?¿Qué huesos rotos vamos a reparar juntos ahora?," with my collaborator @miradavaga at @museodelchopo in Mexico City for @makelit . Our audience was enthusiastic and got straight to work producing collective verses for our collecting song. Thanks to all who participated!
In "What broken bones will we mend together now?", we explored collective healing, rage, repair, and release. The performance reflects on what it means to be together in times of political crisis and how we can stay present for each other amidst the numbness produced by an overwhelming reality. Using selected text from freedom songs, protest music, and news headlines gathered by the artists across the border, audience members created a collective anthem of hope to reestablish the shattered connection to home that sustains us. @jenbeaujean was our invited vocalist who guided us in song using her experience as a jazz improviser.
