So delighted to be hosting Lie Ning—who will be accompanied by the ethereal Wolle—as one of the musicians who will take to the stage to honour the legacy of Esther Bejarano during ‘A Song for Esther.’
You are warmly invited to join us at HAU1 in Berlin for this gathering on 6 June or 7 June. In addition to
@lie__ning and
@wolllleeeeee , expect powerful contributions by Peaches, Polly Ott, Aeham Ahmad, Lili Sommerfeld, Dejan Jovanović & Oana Cătălina Chiţu, Die Anstalt, Rasha Nahas, Lurje Judelman Shneyveys, Sialan Quartet, and our very special guests, Bejarano & Microphone Mafia.
This conceptual concert is a transient monument marking the absence of the late, great Esther Bejarano (1924-2021), who survived Auschwitz and Ravensbrück to become a legendary musician and antifascist activist. It seeks to connect the dots between fascisms of the past and fascisms of the present, as Esther would have wanted. The narrative homage is punctuated by a series of magnificent musical contributions.
This will be an evening for laughing and crying together, for mourning and dreaming together, for reflecting on what agency is available to artists and musicians during times of genocide and repression. How might we collectively respond to the erosion of freedom of expression and intensifying restrictions on freedom of assembly in the face of rising fascism?
It’s a joy to be staging this concert again in my hometown, both in tribute to a deeply admired ancestor, but also in gratitude to the Berlin community that has kept things real over the last couple of years. You know who you are. If you’ve found the last two and a half years excruciating, this concert is for you.
With immense gratitude to the Bejarano family.
