American folk singer-songwriter Annahstasia’s music career blossomed since the day she got kicked out of her teenage choir. Her voice didn’t blend homogenously with others, as it always meant to stand out. Today, with her soulful contralto register, she often gets compared to the greats like Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, and Sade. But the way she utilizes her voice and songwriting melds a distinct brand of her own. As a storyteller, @annahstasia doesn’t worry too much about predictable song structures with repeatable sections. Instead, she invites her collaborators and listeners into her safe space to participate as a communal sonic atmosphere begins to take shape. Like an “energy doula”, she approaches the dynamics in her music with the utmost care, birthing not only words and musical notes but also volumes of emotion. Sometimes, her melodies and harmonies are tethered so tightly to silence that you might miss them if you’re not listening closely. Then, they burst out again, like a thunderstorm that came out of nowhere to grasp your attention and never let go. Offering an inimitable aural experience, Annahstasia performs a solo set at our Manhattan studios for the latest edition of Soundcheck. This is "Be Kind". @annahstasia is in no rush. In an era when artists are pressured to chase viral hits, post on social media, and constantly drop new singles, the L.A.-based singer-songwriter follows her artistic intuitions. Even though her debut album, ‘Tether,’ landed on many best new album lists after its June release, the road there was not easy. In fact, she was signed to a label—and then shelved—as a teen, and says the experience left her fiercely devoted to her art today; if she can’t protect it, no one else will. True to form, instead of following up with an entirely new album, in March she released ‘Live at the Glasshaus,’ an anthology of live recordings with warm, free-flowing arrangements of her existing songs. Making music, she says, isn’t about ego. “I learned this from my parents. To be an artist is to be in service of the present and to be in service of the world.” For ELLE's Women in Music portfolio, Annahstasia gets real about her debut LP, the truth about breakout success, and how to make music her way. @annahstasia + I ❤️ @publicrecords for residency last night. The story goes, I was on my first support tour with Annahstasia in December… While on tour, I showed her this beautiful song. It’s an iconic record by Bernice Johnson Reagon, the founding member of Sweet Honey In The Rock. So glad I got to sing this with my family. Much love y’all and let’s lean on each other 🫱🏾‍🫲🏿✨
